Only because they’ve been allowed to with no repercussions or consequences.
Treason has become so trendy that few dare to even call it what it is anymore.

Betrayal is now held high as an act of virtue.

Also The Left hated Nixon for his campaign against Helen Gahagan Douglas.

Quite true!

How do we begin to fix that?

Enforcing the laws currently on the books.

http://www.access.gpo.gov/uscode/title18/parti_chapter115_.html

Read each section. Make yourself aware. Then start calling the guilty out as they identify themselves.

If those tasked with the duty to enforce our laws dont step up and follow their oath, it will eventually be left to those who still honor the oath of enlistment to step up and follow theirs.

Joseph McCarthy wasn't *nearly* as far off the mark as the left has continuously claimed since the 50's!

Joseph McCarthy's problem is that he went after the enemy that infiltrated the Fourth of July picnic with a cluster bomb instead of a sniper rifle.

McCarthy did more harm to the anti-Communist efforts than an a shipload of KGB agents. McCarthy helped make anti-Communists something to be feared in the minds of millions of Americans.

He hated the Dept of State. Said it was nothing but a haven for socialists and 5th columnists.

Some things NEVER change!

“Joseph McCarthy wasn’t *nearly* as far off the mark as the left has continuously claimed since the 50’s!”

If Joe hadn’t been on the sauce, he could have changed the face of power in this country. Instead, he went down and took the whole anti-Communist movement down with him.

Good points all. And all point the same direction.

If the results of McCarthy’s exercise was to destroy the anti-communist forces, what makes you think that McCarthy had anything to do with it. Perhaps somebody was playing McCarthy like a violin, if not from the very beginning, then surely after he became noticeable. Who advised him to go after entertainers and academics, that surely was not his goal in the beginning. That started the public animosity that eventually led to his demise.

Sometimes favorable outcomes happen for particular individuals (in this case, the communists and their enablers) because they manufactured their own “luck”.

I must admit that until the moment I read your post the thought had not occurred to me but, upon reflection, I think you may well be on to something as anyone with any experience at all in such matters knows that it is the easiest thing in the world to "play" someone like Joe McCarthy.

or why we put our major military effort against Germany

Hitler did declare war on America, not the other way around.

It is somewhat similar to applying Occams Razor. When you peel away all that is not possible and all that is improbable, what remains is the answer. The anti-communist were thwarted and the Communists have gotten a pass ever since. Who most likely had the most influence on the outcome?

McCarthy did not destroy anti-Communist forces. He just made our job much harder as his shotgun accusations against anybody he thought could get him media attention made "anti-Communism" synonymous with "witch hunt" in many minds.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines McCarthyism as "The political practice of publicizing accusations of disloyalty or subversion with insufficient regard to evidence."

McCarthy shed light on the Communists but McCarthy also Nifonged a lot of innocent people.

McCarthy accused General George Marshall of being guilty of treason and said that General Marshall was part of "a conspiracy so immense and an infamy so black as to dwarf any previous venture in the history of man."

Once you have a media-whore politician accusing specific people of being Communists or Fascists or "traitors" or whatever without having evidence to back it up, people turn against such a man and his philosophy as a simple matter of self defense.

As Harry Truman observed, McCarthy was "the best asset the Kremlin has."

Right job. Wrong man for the job.

Do you think McCarthy was acting completely independently, no one buzzing in his ear? I think that unlikely.

The bad guys won a very big battle, I do not think they just “fell into” that victory.

Hey guys, good old FDR actually hired commies to work on his economic platform and later were in the WH as advisors. They continued on with Truman and many others infested the State Dept. Commies in the hundreds were and still are members of the RAT party. Now they are called progressives and at worst socialists. Hitlery is one of this variety.

Oh I agree and now realize just how easy a thing it was for them to accomplish given the personal proclivities (egotistical drunk) of the principal actor.

I had never before considered the angle you raise because it really doesn't matter since, as you so correctly state, The anti-communist were thwarted and the Communists have gotten a pass ever since.

My great uncle also worked in China as the US Counsel General prior to the War. He and his wife were trapped in Hong Kong, then Singapore, but got away from the Nip invaders and made it to Australia. Your relative and my uncle might have known each other. Talk about turbulent times! The Nip military leaders abetted genocide big time in China, making possible the rise of the Chicoms who are even more serious killers.

Some were called communists but weren’t such as Milton Wolff, the last commander of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion in the Spanish Civil War ‘37-39. I interviewed him, incredible person, still alive I believe.

You are, of course, very right. But it is not a very popular right. The implications can be quite mind-boggling.
