It is somewhat similar to applying Occams Razor. When you peel away all that is not possible and all that is improbable, what remains is the answer. The anti-communist were thwarted and the Communists have gotten a pass ever since. Who most likely had the most influence on the outcome?

Oh I agree and now realize just how easy a thing it was for them to accomplish given the personal proclivities (egotistical drunk) of the principal actor.

I had never before considered the angle you raise because it really doesn't matter since, as you so correctly state, The anti-communist were thwarted and the Communists have gotten a pass ever since.
