Newt Advises Fred
Human Events ^ | Robert Novak

Posted on 08/24/2007 9:37:08 PM PDT by Doofer

Fred Thompson's decision to announce his presidential candidacy with a video was suggested by Newt Gingrich, who is considered a possible contender himself.

Former House Speaker Gingrich has indicated he will run only if Thompson does not or his late-starting campaign crashes and burns. Actor-politician Thompson plans to follow the model of Democrat Hillary Clinton by launching his campaign with a video, followed by a fly-around to several cities.

Gingrich has expressed contempt for becoming one of many announced Republican candidates at crowded debates. Thompson has decided to be one of many at the Sept. 27 debate at Baltimore's Morgan State University.

Do you think any more R candidates will declare before primary deadlines?

why hasn’t Newt been trully sorry as he has said? You sound very hard on him...why can’t you take him on his word? He sounds strong to me.

I used to love to listen to Newt speak. But now, he has zero credibility. He's a talking head now. I'd no sooner support him than I would Dick Morriss.

Maybe I'm in Michelle Obama's camp here when it comes to marital infedelity. If a man can't take care of his own household, how is he going to run the White House? We were pretty hard on Bill Clinton. Newt was especially hard on him, all while he was doing the exact same thing. Do you forgive Bill as well, or is it different because there is a D next to his name?

Now our party has four front-runners (including McCain for sake of argument), only 1 of which has stayed married to the same person. All of a sudden this is not an issue to conservatives? If not, we have truly sold our soul.

Darkwolf:

So we are stuck with these wierdos, all. The wierdo I can best stomach is *still* ''none of the above'. Hunter seems a good guy, just not enough to pull it off.

I can't but infer that the R party is throwing the election to Hillary, as they/we can't put up anything better.

After Dole's lame-as-lame-can-be run in 96, I'm starting to wonder if the Republican National Committee LIKES the Clintons.

The Republican candidates are either uninspiring or their conservative ideals are wrapped up in Darth Vader-like personalities. Or, worse, they're Ron Paul.

it’s not an issue if the person has really repented about the infidelity...I can hear a real person who is differnet in Newt and he speaks about his errors of the past in a humble way. I don’t hear that same contrite spirit from Bill Clinton..I think he is the same womanizer regardless of whether or not he is a democrat. Almost everyone has committed some pretty bad sins in their lives so I wouldn’t be to self-righteous if I were you.

I don't know. I would like to see more conservative R candidates join the race. When you boil it down, outside of Tancredo and Hunter there are no legitimate conservatives running. And since neither man has made a serious impact on the race from their second tier status, somethings gotta give.

All the more reason why folks on the right should hope Fred Thompson gets in the race. He's one of us. A conservative who is pro-defense, pro-limited govt (federalism), pro-tax reform, pro-gun, pro-life and anti-amnesty.

Fred is dead as a candidate if Newt is advising him.

Can you imagine a guy running for Commander In Chief who thinks war is a quaint '40s anachronism? Ron Paul thinks war is a NO-NO. In this time of islamic reconquista?

I used to want Gingrich/North, now I want Bolton/North.

Well, we used to have standards in this party for personal morality. The impeachment was all about "principle", but now it seems to me that it was all about beating the other guy. I think people have seen politicians like Newt say one thing and do another, and rightly or wrongly have judged the entire party as hypocrites. America will forgive a sinner faster than it will forgive a hypocrite.

As for repentance, you are assuming that Bill hasn't made peace with Hillary or with the Lord. None of us can know that. As for Newt's situation, it was bad enough to cause him to give up his leadership role and his place in Congress. So he's basically been a non-factor in Washington since he left. Meanwhile, the R's in Congress have steadily been losing ground to D's. You might be willing to forgive, but I think his time has passed. He has squandered his opportunity to lead this country. You just don't get second chances to do that.

Good question — I wish I knew. I am mildly encouraged that Thompson and now other candidates are talking about federalism, and that Thompson has a strong, documented record of pushing for it. It also might help if people became convinced that DC politicians are the last people who should be dictating to them how to live their lives in (insert their city or town). I personally have spent the past seven years listening to liberal friends complain about W., and reminding them that the best way to protect against a president they don’t like is to stop investing the feds with all the power. :)

That said, the original federalists believed that the states would be too protective of their power to ever let the feds trample them the way they have. But unfortunately, the states too often conspire with the feds.

I’m hoping at the very least, the pendulum might be swinging back a bit. If I recall correctly, some states raised their speed limits above 55 even though the feds threatened them with loss of highway funds. Many states are passing medical marijuana laws against the feds’ wishes. The 1990s Contract with America movement against unfunded federal mandates was another good step. There are probably other examples that I can’t remember right now...

Ron wants us to let the terrorists win. I don’t know why he wants that.

actually I can see from Clinton’s insane rage and rant against Chris Wallace that he is not humble at all. The same denial of reality. Newt, on the other hand has learned a very hard lesson from much pain and suffering.

In W’s wake we see Canada, France, Australia, others realizing the mandate to rein in Islam. We see Netanyahu possibly making a comeback in Israel. Yet we don’t ourselves have a viable hardliner. ?

Maybe Americans are eager to let other nations take the lead.

Although I found it interesting that the dems are mumbling that another terrorist attack would be good for Republicans. Isn't it weird how they're kind of jumping on the wagon NOW, this far out, to avoid the "endorsed by UBL" label Kerry wore?

There's hope. America is all about hope. We'll pull it off, somehow, always have.

If we can't find a leader, we'll just have to be our own leader. Like Toqueville said, America is great because Americans are great. When Americans cease to be great, America will cease to be great.

Can we be great under Hillary? probably not.

You’re right, as was Toqueville—whoever the president may be, I’m going to keep working hard. In fact, Americans tend to dislike their presidents.
