Sportsmen's Issues Thrust Into 2008 Race
NY Sun ^ | August 24, 2007 | JOSH GERSTEIN

An unusual move by President Bush to promote hunting on federal lands is calling attention to so-called sportsmen's issues, which presidential candidates have largely neglected on the stump in recent months.

Last week, Mr. Bush issued an executive order instructing federal agencies to "manage wildlife and wildlife habitats on public lands in a manner that expands and enhances hunting opportunities." The order also encourages federal officials to respect "state management authority over wildlife resources."

The order was immediately hailed by the National Rifle Association, which described the action as "groundbreaking."

"Anti-hunting groups have long fought to dismantle public hunting land in an effort to eradicate America's sporting heritage," the NRA's chief lobbyist, Christopher Cox, said in a written statement. "The President's order will safeguard our treasured hunting heritage for generations to come."

The executive director of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, Jeffrey Ruch, said Mr. Bush seemed to be declaring a policy of "hunting über alles," putting hunting ahead of all other uses of public land. "We're not anti-hunting, but … you might as well have said the most important activity in a park is skateboarding," Mr. Ruch said. "The notion that we're supposed to maximize the number of deer and elk so they can end up as trophies on somebody's wall would make most biologists in government agencies sort of shudder."...

--snip--

A political strategist who has urged Democrats to take a moderate stance on gun issues, James Kessler, said the order appeared to be intended to reinject such questions into the presidential race. "It could be a reminder to gun owners and hunters that ‘There's a difference between Republicans and Democrats on these issues, and don't you forget it,'" Mr. Kessler said. "It comes at a time when the issue has been way, way on the back burner."...

Hey, George, how about an executive order to the anti-gun morons over at BATFE to lay off the guns and ammo necessary for people to hunt - and all other guns and ammo, for that matter? How about getting the "sporting purposes" language removed from the US Code sections adopted with the 1968 Gun Control Act? After all, the 2nd Amendment ISN'T about deer hunting, and many rifles suitable for 2nd Amendment purposes are banned for hunting (like .223 caliber weapons for deer hunting). How about getting the BATFE to stop bans on imports of foreign-made firearms and ammunition, whether of a "sporting" or other (i.e. military) origin?

How about trying to get the unconstitutional Title 18, Section 922(o) repealed? How about trying to get the Ex Post Facto Lautenberg law repealed? How about vetoing "anti-crime" legislation that makes a felony out of an act that is a misdeameanor, and which therefore results in a lifetime gun ban?

Do those things, George, and I'll really believe that you're pro-gun.

When did that happen?

“manage wildlife and wildlife habitats on public lands in a manner that expands and enhances hunting opportunities.” The order also encourages federal officials to respect “state management authority over wildlife resources.”

.....this is good news but will only work if there is funding available....for example the Corps of Engineers manages one of the large lakes in my area....they used to plant food plots for wildlife but haven’t had the money in recent years to continue.....consequently they had to form a citizen’s support group called “Friends of the Lake” and they don’t have the money either....the Corps has the wildlife know how....it all comes down to the money.

....and P.S. part of the tax on amunition is to be earmarked for hunting on public lands....under Clinton they gave the money to Sierra Club and Friends of the Earth and other ANTI-Hunting groups.

Nearly all of the military bases within 200 miles of where I live permit civilian hunters to hunt it already. Eglin AFB is the largest. I have hunted there many times.

pro hunting and pro gun are not the same. You can use a bow and arrowor a spear is even better. What do you need a gun for to hunt? /s

The President needs to fire the virulently anti-hunting head of the Fish & Wildlife Service and then he might actually get something accomplished.

I don’t think patriots are ready to hear this, but the second amendment is dead. It no longer provides a deterrence against tyranny.

I don’t think anybody wants to put that to the test. I don’t own a gun yet but I’d gladly be a part of it.

Why do you say that?

For three reasons:
  1. Our ability to choose, maintain, and supply ourselves with military grade weapons has been restricted to the point that the second amendment's militia vs. standing army intent is no longer viable, and American patriots had to stand by helplessly as their rights were trampled again and again.
  2. Technology, especially computerized data analysis and command/control systems has achieved tremendous advantages in modern combat situations.
  3. The American people have welcomed these changes as 'protective' instead of showing concern.
This last issue is the most important one. Majority rule has won the day, and the majority wants a powerful state bulwark, regardless of the cost.

Deterrence is dead. We are at the mercy of other checks and balances. May God protect us.
