CBS) HAWTHORNE, Calif. Two children menaced by pit bulls in Hawthorne were safe Friday, but a woman running from the dogs broke her leg and a squad car being driven to the scene collided with another vehicle, injuring an officer and a motorist, police said.
A report that two pit bulls were menacing a 16-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother in the 2900 block of 141st Place at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue was received by Hawthorne police about 8 a.m., Hawthorne police Lt. Michael Ishii said.
An animal-control officer distracted the dogs with a chemical spray, and the children ran to safety, Ishii said.
No one was bitten, but a woman who ran from the dogs fell and broke her leg, and she was taken to a hospital, Ishii said.
Meanwhile, an officer driving to the scene crashed into another vehicle at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, he said.
Paramedics transported the officer and the other motorist for treatment of ''minor-to-moderate'' injuries, he said.
The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.

I’m sick and tired of taxpayers having to pay for the irresponsible actions of others
Ah yes, it’s summertime and the pitbulls are frolicking! I know that area, and there was an attack on a mailman in Torrance recently.
I’m glad that pitbulls weren’t prevalent when my daddy was a mailman. The worst thing that happened to him was a German Shepherd ripping his pants.
Totally different species. PBT are types of dog, which species has many types and breeds.
“Pit Bulls get a bad rap because the press is more likely to print a story about a pit bull attacking someone than, say a German Shepherd.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa. German Shepherds have been getting bad raps for decades (partly because of their innovative role in police and military usage), well before PBTs. People still think GS are “naturally vicious”.
What WON’T make the news is a retriever.
As for PBTs, I don’t want them or any banned. But, they do seem to have a natural prediliction for this (they were bred originally to fight bulls - nasty things - and then each other; and now they are popular again here as fighters). It is a total fantasy that any animal does something purely because it was “forced” that way - only robots can be made to do exactly what outside influence dictates. Genetics is just as important as environment. They also have a tendency - as most terriers - to be persistent about what they’re doing, and don’t want to give it up. That is the real problem with them.
Maybe so, but now that it’s happened, they’re out there and a lot of innocent people could be killed or mauled. I’d rather be shot than mauled. Way more damage and no way to repair it very easily or well.
The first job I ever had was working in a law office. One of the first cases I every saw was a horrific dog bite case. It was a small boy. Though I forgot the dog breed, I have never forgotten those pictures of that poor little boy’s shredded face and missing ear.
Yeah, but you can stomp on ‘em, and sing the “La Cucaracha” song.
The point is, guns don’t kill people, people do. Thus, you cannot ban guns. Dogs are autonomous creatures never totally under a human’s control.
However, I still despise the banning idea for multiple reasons.
and as I'm fond of saying: "that's why God invented guns"...
I see what you mean but just because there is a potential for abuse doesn't mean that the gub'mint needs to regulate yet another thing. Any dog can be trained/abused to attack, should we ban dogs, ownership or certain people from having them...
[[[They just dont make good PC reading unless they are pit bull or rottweiler incidents}}}
Pardon me? PC? Do Retrievers, Chihuahua’s, and German Shepards belong to a protected minority or something? If a Dachsund kills a 7 year old boy or a Malamute attacks a woman in her sleep, you can be sure the media will print the story. And there is nothing preventing anyone on FR from posting those stories if you can find them.
The simple fact is that you can’t find these stories because they aren’t happening. Yes, other breeds bite, but Pit Bulls attack, maul, and KILL!! There is a slight difference.
Someone is the operative word. I've ye to see a "gun" run down the street shooting at people
I’m a dog lover too. I’m a total whacko when it comes to dogs. I love Doxies! I have 2 German Short Haired Pointers right now, but I’ve lived with or around many, many breeds.
I feel sorry for the dogs, but I’m also a realist.
Excellent comments in your post.
LOL
In fact, I plan to get one soon. I just have to talk the wife into letting me have another dog. I think that the pit bulls with "brindle" coats are beautiful, but I'm not stuck on any one color.
What a little cutie! Just look at that face.
Do you have a credible source for this statement, or is is just your personal opinion and worth every penny of what I paid for it?
"I don't want these animals in my neighborhood. Period.
Fine ... that's your choice. If someone with a pit moves in down the street from you are you going to exercise your freedom to move?
Schutzhund with a PBT. Yikes. LOL
yes, actually, I do. But large carnivorous cats are not domesticated but dogs are. Banning a breed is ridiculous. I had a pitbull and he was a great dog.
Even if it serves me, I will never agree to yet another gub'mint restriction on our freedom.
Can you name three things in you life, that your do/can do that is not regulated in some way?
That face gives me the chills.
Those things are strictly bad news.
“When are we going to outlaw these dogs?”
When we’re all as brain dead as the American leftists.
Baby tigers are cute too, but they belong either in a zoo, or stuffed in my trophy room.
