CBS) HAWTHORNE, Calif. Two children menaced by pit bulls in Hawthorne were safe Friday, but a woman running from the dogs broke her leg and a squad car being driven to the scene collided with another vehicle, injuring an officer and a motorist, police said.

A report that two pit bulls were menacing a 16-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother in the 2900 block of 141st Place at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue was received by Hawthorne police about 8 a.m., Hawthorne police Lt. Michael Ishii said.

An animal-control officer distracted the dogs with a chemical spray, and the children ran to safety, Ishii said.

No one was bitten, but a woman who ran from the dogs fell and broke her leg, and she was taken to a hospital, Ishii said.

Meanwhile, an officer driving to the scene crashed into another vehicle at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, he said.

Paramedics transported the officer and the other motorist for treatment of ''minor-to-moderate'' injuries, he said.

The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.

Now really, you know Poodles and Shih-tzus are much more vicious. It’s the owners’ fault.

And it’s not even the poor dogs’ fault either.

So, these dogs got maced becasue they were, what, barking? It’s not as if they mauled the kids. Pit Bulls get a bad rap because the press is more likely to print a story about a pit bull attacking someone than, say a German Shepherd.

If you have a mean Pit Bull, it’s almost assured that either the owner or a previous owner made it that way (Vick anyone?) It’s a rare dog that grows up on it’s on to be mean.

don’t come running down the sidewalk and take a hunk outta yer leg

I would also point out that someone with a gun doesn't have to run down the street towards you to take a hunk out of your leg.

Congrats to all of the conservatives here that are falling for the bait that the liberal media is putting out there for you. On most other subjects you wouldn't believe the MSM for a moment, but when it suits your agenda you heartily agree!

Yeah, let's not promote personal responsibility for animal owners and hold them accountable ... let's get our wonderful benovolent government to pass more laws for our own good.

Sheesh.

Of course not. Their owners trained them to menace, maul, and kill. These poor duped beasts were only doing what society forced them to do.

I’m just waiting for the Pit Crew to blame George Bush.

Those cute doggies probably wanted to give her a bunny kiss.

You only hear about the dog attacks the media wants you to hear about, though.

There were probably many other attacks by many other breeds of dogs as well that the MSM could have focused on.

They just don’t make good PC reading unless they are pit bull or rottweiler incidents.

Even if they are not trained to be “mean,” pit bulls were bred to clamp on to their “victim” and not let go until death. Not a dog I’d want in my home or neighborhood.

Oh, you've really stepped in it now! Please don't try to tell the bulldog haters around here that there is any such thing as a friendly pitt. They won't buy it if you offer a free demonstration.

Of course the media is not only likely, but dead certain, to report on any incident involving a pitt, but you almost never hear about the daily bites and worse from other breeds. I was almost bitten by a vicious lab the other day and I didn't even call the local news. The worse dog I know personally happens to be a dachshund, followed closely by an cocker. Afghan hounds are renound for being fear biters ... but they are *pretty*.

I don’t buy that one little bit. Every city has a record of dog attacks and certain breeds are more known for biting (e.g. German Shepherds, Chows, etc.) The important thing is that if a cocker spaniel or a dachsund attacks me, I could kick it’s little head it (I’m small too - 5’) but if a big rottie or doberman (and I like those dogs) comes at me, I’m in big trouble.

It’s not just that certain dogs are more inclined to be aggressive but that some dogs naturally have a greater propensity to do serious damage, especially to children.

If you were small and a dog could chew your face off without even getting on its hind legs, you might think differently.

How about tigers? Do you think they are only aggressive when they have been "trained" to be that way?

Animinal aggressiveness can be trained OR it can be carried in the genes.

Pits have been selective bred for this trait. It is in their DNA.

Don't be a dummy.

I am a huge dog lover. Had dogs all my life Doxies’ as a kid and Labs as an adult.

However I agree with you about Pit Bulls.
Just last week a woman sleeping in her BED had 2 pit bulls come through her doggie door to attack her dog and the nieghbors dog who comes over and gets in bed with her and her dog.

They then turned on her ripping the flesh from her face and both ams.

She grabbed her GUN from her nightstand to shoot them dead but the attack was so intense she could not get the safety off.

She was adamant that those dogs would have bit the bullet if she could have gotten of a few.

In her bed sleeping!

We also get a few attacks a week and usually some pit bull living in a low income apt. building.

I have heard the how sweet my pit bull is stories but I have heard to many more horrid attack stories.

Yeah, let's not promote personal responsibility for animal owners and hold them accountable

Responsible people don't own pit bulls. I don't want these animals in my neighborhood. Period.
