U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole will be in Raleigh today to talk with sheriffs from Wake, Johnston, Chatham, Franklin and six other counties about illegal immigrants who commit crimes. Dole is holding a series of conferences with sheriffs this month about a federal program to let deputies determine the legal status of immigrants and process those here illegally who are charged with crimes.
Kicking off the tour on Tuesday, Dole met with sheriffs from the western Piedmont. The sheriffs from Catawba, Burke, Caldwell and Alexander counties said they often see the same immigrants breaking laws across county lines, the Charlotte Observer reported. But deputies must travel to Charlotte to determine whether they are in the country legally.
"They simply don't have the money [to do this alone]," the Observer quoted Dole as saying. "They have had many frustrating problems because they just haven't had the tools."
Money from the federal program, Dole said, would let the four counties share a database housed in Catawba County.
The meeting in Raleigh today will take place at 3:50 p.m. at the Terry Sanford Federal Building and Courthouse on New Bern Avenue.
Dole's tour around the state coincides with a period of intense political fund raising, including major events in Raleigh, Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Dole faces re-election next year.
The Raleigh fund-raiser takes place tonight at the Angus Barn.
Dole, a Salisbury Republican, has raised $2.76 million this year and had $1.76 million on hand June 20, the end of the last campaign finance reporting period.
So far, she has no Democratic opposition. Several Democrats are looking at the race, including state Rep. Grier Martin of Raleigh, state Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro and former state Sen. Ted Kaplan of Winston-Salem.
Somebody in the Republican Party had better take heed of money and contributions, because I’ve already expressed to several organisations contacting me for money, that until the Republican Party gets its head out of it a** regarding illegal immigration, I will only contribute to particular candidates, not groups.
Dole voted against amnesty, a big plus for her. Ironic to give someone credit for what every senator who supports this country should have done.

I quite happily printed out a few 'gringo bucks' and put them in the postage paid envelope. I hope Trent "we have to stop talk radio" Lott opens it up himself.

Trent sure has gone over to the dark side.
You are so right, the handwriting was on the wall when he caved regarding his remarks at the Strom Thurmond farewell gathering.
She didn't just vote against it, she was instrumental in rigging the parlimentary procedure that helped kill it the first time.
I never thought I'd see the day when Liddy Dole was way to the right of Bush on an issue. But she gets it.

He knows who butters his bread. He sold out long ago.
The fight against amnesty should not be such an exclusive club. I welcome anyone to this fight, given how vital it is, and Dole was critical in amnesty's defeat.
I agree. Amnesty was such a horrific sellout of this country that I give credit to everyone who stood up against it, and she did far more than most.
Apparently not on illegal immigration.
Notice how they spin this. Illegal aliens are criminals by definition, any other crimes they commit simply adds to their criminal status. To read that line you would think the word illegal meant nothing, just another adjective.

Been trying to shine a light on this for some time now. No doubt in my mind that we’re being set up for Shamnesty, Part II.... to accept a “deal”, a compromise...to determine “who is here”, distinguish between the ‘bad’ and the ‘good’ illegal aleins, with the latter (majority) being given “aspirations of citizenship”.
They will say anything to stay in Washington.
Libby wants to stay, while Bush is leaving.
I want English only and deportations, now!
She's starting out on a false premise - they've ALL committed a crime.
