Why they bother with the full appeals process is beyond me. There should be one automatic review of the case at the state supreme court, with maybe a month, probably less, after sentence is passed for the sides to prepare arguments. The governor has one week after the conviction and sentence are upheld to consider a commutation, a stay, or a pardon. After that week, sentence is carried out.
There it is. Quick and fair. We could even shell out to appoint and pay the best possible defense attorneys for the defendant, just to make sure there's no grounds for appeal on the basis of incompetent defense, which is the most common reason a death sentence is overturned.
