Spinning the Surge (Democrats Were On Offense But Now On Defense)
New York Times ^ | 22 August 2007 | Tobin Harshaw

Posted on 08/23/2007 7:50:22 AM PDT by shrinkermd

“Democratic leaders in Congress had planned to use August recess to raise the heat on Republicans to break with President Bush on the Iraq war.

Instead, Democrats have been forced to recalibrate their own message in the face of recent positive signs on the security front, increasingly focusing their criticisms on what those military gains have not achieved: reconciliation among Iraq’s diverse political factions.”

Cue the grumbling from the left. “With all this undisciplined, rambling ‘the surge is working’ talk and a Republican ad blitz coming around the corner to bolster Bush’s White House Report, it’s clear the Democrats have strayed so dangerously off message as to threaten what we’ve worked for all this time,” writes the liberal radio host Taylor Marsh. “Bush got his surge, with an escalation on top.

The political movement in Iraq is non-existent, but yet the Democrats are about to be pressured that ‘the surge is working’ through a political ad blitz right before Petreaus delivers the White House Report on — wait for it — 9/11/07.”

Then the triumphalism from the right: “The Democrats have already admitted that good new in Iraq is bad new for Democrats,” writes Paul at the conservative collective Wizbang. “So now they have to change the message and whine about the supposed lack of political progress. It’s not surprising they continue to use Iraq as a political football. They have a long history of it.”

My or my how things change. We may see that clip of Harry Reid telling us we lost the war over and over again during the election season. I hope so.

The Democrats fumbled an opportunity to steal the credit for the undeniable progress made in Iraq in 2007. Had they played their cards right, they could have campaigned in 2008 that it was they who forced Rumsfeld’s resignation, and forced the change in strategy. The Democratic victory in 2006 served as the catalyst to force the President to do what many in his administration and the military had recommended.

Instead, the surrender monkeys of the Democratic Party are on the defensive, even as the U.S. military has regained the offensive.

And there is this from yesterday:

Has Maliki Ended The Insurgency?breaking news

************************************EXCERPT**********************************

Earlier today, the Italian news service AKI reported that the presumed leader of the largest insurgency in Iraq will start cooperating with the Iraqi government. Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, one of the highest-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's government, reportedly pledged to work with Iraqi and American forces to fight al-Qaeda in Iraq:

Glad to see the message is getting out. The Do Nothings have been doing this on Iraq since the start. Everytime the Iraqis meet a goal, they shift the goal posts. This has been going on since 2003. Nothing new but finally the Support the Mission people are getting wise to them.

Really bad news for the Hysteric Left. Security is the 1st step. Until the security scene is stabalized, you will get no real political and economic progress. People are not going to get involved in the Govt or build up businesses if they have a real chance of seeing their wives and children raped and murdered before they get their head cut off with a dull saber for their troubles. Now that progress has been made on security, you are all ready seeing progress on the political front. The Economic front will follow.

The Left thinks they see an opening door on Iraq but, because they simply tune out all factual reality to cling to their dogmas on Iraq, they are instead going to run their face in to the door again. We are all ready seeing signs that the political process, glacerially slow at any time in any Arab country even without all the structural problems Iraq faces, is coming unstuck.

Nobody has asked the most salient question.

How in the hell did this article make it past the editors of the NYTimes?

That is a very good question. Orders from the Hillary camp? "Hey knock this crap off or you going to McGovernize the party!" maybe?

Answer on why editors let this article get printed -

They are on the Hillary bandwagon and see her movement to the center, and will support it until Obama and Edwards are dust.

So far it’s working. This is not the first NYT article about the surge working, and Hillary has been sprinting away from Obama and Edwards ever since.

She may not be Presidential, but she is showing that Obama and Edwards are incapable of being Commander-in-Chief of this country. Now their wives are moving in to help prove it even more, more of a plus for Hillary. Obama and Edwards have no chance, and the campaign hasn’t officially gotten underway yet.

The good part is that Hillary’s negatives are too high, and without Bloomberg taking 10% of the vote, her numbers are too low to get elected.

Thanks for stealing/borrowing it.

The left wing pundit mediots are saying that these Vets are republicans and omitting that they are vets who have served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

“”My or my how things change. We may see that clip of Harry Reid telling us we lost the war over and over again during the election season. I hope so.””

You are exactly correct. If the RNC is at all competent they will make sure that every Democrat is ‘running with Harry Reid’ in the 2008 election. They should scour the newspapers to find pictures of every candidate shaking hands with Ried (or Jack Murtha) and include that in each political ad.

The reason this was in the NYT is that it wasn’t in the dead tree edition, but rather one of their online blogs.
