Come September, America might slip closer toward a Weimar moment. It would be milder than the original but significantly disagreeable.
After the First World War, politics in Germany's new Weimar Republic were poisoned by the belief that the army had been poised for victory in 1918 and that one more surge could have turned the tide. Many Germans bitterly concluded that the political class, having lost its nerve and will to win, capitulated. The fact that fanciful analysis fed this rancor did not diminish its power.
The Weimar Republic was fragile; America's domestic tranquility is not. Still, remember the bitterness stirred by the accusatory question "Who lost China?" and corrosive suspicions that the fruits of victory in Europe had been squandered by Americans of bad character or bad motives at Yalta.
So, consider this: When Gen. David Petraeus delivers his report on the war, his Washington audience will include two militant factions. Perhaps nothing he can responsibly say will sway either, so September will reinforce animosities.

It's obvious the dems already have their strategy - relentlessly attack the Iraqi government.
Ye Gods! This man has lost it!
What September won’t settle:
Why Democrats are so eager for America to lose and what America should do about these treasonous RATS.
There is undoubtable progress. Watch how the Dems spin negatively out of positive progress ... I mean Liberals could stare at an Iraq that is thriving, prosperous and pretty much normal and still find flaws... They are politically too invested in failure to change... Our GOP reps should be out front at every opportunity reminding America that the Democrats have invested in Failure so they will try to spin negatives out of the positive.
SO basically George Will is saying that, the Democrats, having failed to defeat America on the battlefield, will now do their level best to destroy the Iraqi political process to ensure a defeat that they can hang round G W Bush’s neck.
Exactly, they do precisely that with America all the time, don't they?
good to know I was not the only one who had trouble following this guys ... ahem “logic”.
wienie
General Petraeus’ report is largely irrelevant, if one had listened to the President’s speech this week. We are going to continue with the surge. The Dems, having noted the military progress made this summer, have already shifted their attacks to the Iraqi government. To them, now it’s the political side of the battle that’s wanting. Feh on them!
Right but only when there is a Republican President..
Its all about politics to the idiots on the left....
So I guess we need to send Bill Clinton to Iraq to prop up the Government over there then the Libs will get onboard... Right... I mean this whole business has never been about the Iraqi’s this is about U.S. Politics and its ashame because our soldiers pay with their lives as do the Iraqi civilians.

The only question is how does Geo. Will make a living as a pundit? Georgie must have a Kennedy like Trust Fund to support such a complex mindlessness!
Success in Iraq would be another contented Republic without Socialist rule, therefore the Dems, Libs, Socialists attempt to obstruct progress towards such contentment, or have the task of creating dissent to achieve their goals in the future.
The U.S. was such a contented Society until creative dissent of Socialist operatives utilizing the system weakened the Republic with their mischief.
It’s long past time to shake the Liberal/Socialist’s trees, drop their fairies hard onto the ground and ship them back to Disney.
(Having a cynical week here.)
Re: #2. I agree. If I recall correctly, George Will wrote an article where he essentially gave up on the Iraq war some time ago. I’m sure he got lots of cocktail invites after that article. As with the Democrats, he now sees progress being made and has climbed back up on the fence to see which way the wind blows. In my humble opinion, he has turned into a self-important pedantic blowhard...
>> Ye Gods! This man has lost it!
I’m afraid his academentia is flaring up.
