Lawmaker Concerned About Safety Of U-S Olympic Athletes In China

Olympic games are scheduled for September 8-24 in Beijing, China and that has one New Jersey lawmaker worried about the safety of U-S athletes who will be competing. Assemblyman Neil Cohen says, "60-80% of Chinese products or products that we make here that have Chinese components are subject to recall."

The recall of popular children's toys is making big news, but that is not what concerns Cohen. He points out that beef, chicken, fish, unfiltrated water, vegetables and toothpaste have been recalled. He is sending a letter to U.S. Olympic officials telling them that when our competitors head to China, "I want everything to be pure American consumables without any type of product that contains China products or else we'll be tainting our own athletes."

Cohen says every possible precaution must be taken to protect U.S. athletes staying in China for the Olympics and, "The only way you can do that is to make sure that all the products that are being brought over to service our Olympic athletes are from the United States."

"It's not that's there's little oversight (in China), I don't believe there's any oversight," says Cohen, "they started executing executives and people in the bureaucracy who were receiving bribes." The Assemblyman is referring to the recent execution of the former director of China's state food and drug administration for dereliction of duty and accepting bribes in exchange for green-lighting sales of dangerous medications. He says this shows the need for increased protection and education of New Jersey consumers as well.

They should avoid playing with any toys containing “red” paint and don’t use the damn chopsticks!

The International Special Olympics are being held in China this year at the end of September. This will be China's first test of hosting a major event.

There are about 500 participants from Texas that are registered.

"The event will mark the first time the World Summer Games will be held in Asia, and only the second time they will be held outside the United States. In addition to almost 7,500 athletes, Special Olympics expects the 2007 World Summer Games to draw 40,000 volunteers, 3,500 event officials and thousands of families, volunteers, spectators and journalists from every continent."

Wonder if any of those special olympians are disabled because of Chinese poison in products?
