NAHA -- China Airlines has painted over its name and logo on the wreckage of a passenger jet that exploded in flames at Naha Airport in Okinawa moments after passengers slid down emergency chutes to escape.
The airline painted over the name "China Airlines" on the left-hand side of the aircraft and the company's logo on the plane's tail fin.
After the accident, photographs and video footage of the jet continued to appear in news reports, and the company apparently painted over the name and logo to limit further damage to its image.
Before painting over the name and logo, the airline sought permission from the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry's Aircraft and Railway Accidents Investigation Commission. Officials granted the request, judging that it would not hinder the investigation into the accident, and the airline painted over the markings following inspections carried out on Tuesday.
When questioned over the move, an official from the Taiwan-based airline said, "We followed international procedures. We do not have detailed information." (Mainichi)
You’re right, minus_273. China Airlines is based in Taiwan and has nothing to do with any companies or the government based on the mainland AKA The People’s Republic of China (PRC). Taiwan, called Formosa by the Portugese, was once known as the Republic of China when it was ruled by the Nationalists led by Chiang (surname) Kai-shek. China Airlines was the national carrier. The Nationalists lost the Civil War to the Communists, led by Mao (surname) Zedong in 1949 and fled to Taiwan, which had recently (1945 at the time) been liberated from Japanese rule.
Taiwan has become a very spirited democracy, unlike the PRC, since the Nationalists lost elections in the Eighties to native Taiwanese parties.

I do a lot of international business travel to Asia but my travel agent has strict orders to never, ever book a flight for me on China Airlines.
It’s pretty standard for airlines to do this following an accident
Painting over the Airline Name and Logo is common practice throughout the Industry after accidents. This is nothing new.
Delta covered their a/c name and logo with a tarp at a crash in Pensacola years ago.
LOL!

That ain’t Chinnese. That there is JAPANESE, my man.
Firstly, this is Taiwan(R.o.C), not China(P.R.C).
Secondly, it is common practice, even among American airlines, to cover/paint-over/hide names and logos on crashed aircraft. No one wants bad publicity.
China’s national leadership personna reminds me of that of a troubled 13 to 14 year old child. Sadly, we just keep telling them how “special” they are, when they desparately need to hear some life truths.
Well, bad on me... I didn’t realize this was Taiwan. But the comment still stands if they’re covering up.
I don’t care who paints over, it’s a seedy practice. If you want to avoid publicity like this, then keep your aircraft from burning out a runway.
HOW did you get FR to print chineese?
The kanji are Chinese, but there is hiragana too, which would make it Japanese ;)
UPS dose the same thing to their semis and delivery trucks, any time a ups vehicle is in a wreck it is covered with a blue tarp ASAP and anything that cant be covered is painted white

By george, it worked!! :-)
“From a marketing perspective this is very smart.”
Is it? By doing this they’ve put their name back in the news. And it isn’t like folks at the airport wouldn’t know which airline it was.
