Blackcurrant Candy Taken Off Shelves

(JAKARTA) - Local supplier PT Hawaii Confectionery Factory has withdrawn its product "Blackcurrant" candy from the market due to public concern over the possibility it contains the recently banned chemical formaldehyde.

"Blackcurrant candy is a domestic product that is manufactured under a Health Ministry license, but we have decided to withdraw it from the market in the interests of consumer safety until the agency gives us the results," the company's marketing manager, Rusmin Soetjipto, said in a media release issued Monday.

Blackcurrant candy is currently being tested for formaldehyde at the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency, although the company has declared it free of the chemical.

The agency has blacklisted candies imported from China that have been found to contain formaldehyde.

Although Blackcurrant candy is produced locally there is Chinese writing on the packaging, the company said.

Previously, formaldehyde was also found in tofu, meatballs and noodles in the city.

In the short term, formaldehyde, which is usually used for embalming, can cause headaches and respiratory problems. Over the long term, it can cause cancer.

Recently, the agency also issued a public warning, saying many cosmetics were not approved for sale in the country.

A new ban, effective Aug. 1, includes 26 cosmetics products imported from China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines.

The products were banned after being found to contain hazardous substances such as mercury, retinoic acid, hydroquinone and diethyl glycol. Only two of the cosmetics products were officially registered for import.

Looks like the Chinese are going to end up with the whole world not trusting them. And, of course, it will be the US’s fault (or Bush’s, whichever)

Recently banned? Did they just figure out that embalming fluid doesn’t belong in candy?

The reason there is Chinese writing on the packaging is that the compnay put it there for the local Chinese population, and so that the product can be exported.

The company that manufactures the candy, P.T. Hawaii Confectionery Factory, in Jakarta, doesn’t need to speculate as to where they make the candy: they make it at their factory in Jakarta.

If there is any formaldehyde in the candy it is because a raw material was contaminated. You can be sure that formaldehyde is NOT one of the ingredients in the recipe.

I'm gonna make a prediction here and watch for it to unfold in the coming months:

Watch for counterfeit products coming from out from China but labelled as "MADE IN THE USA" as a result of the backlash from the poisonous Chinese products.

The US Customs Service already see the USA flooded with so much counterfeit stuff that it may even take a while for this to get notice!

prophetic,

You have hit that ol' nail right on its head. I remember, as a kid, some town in Japan, which made the converted tin can toys, called USA. Therefore, they got away with saying: "Made in USA", the part they didn't post was USA, Japan.

The Chinese are much less sneaky and far more just using us. Thus the "Made in USA" will just be total bull crap.

Lets hope the folks who are responsible to protect us from this stuff do their job, for which they are paid.

Unfortunately, I will not hold my breath for this to happen. It is a sad day for comments like this but, honestly, I think it is right on target.

That did cross my mind also.

Even the fake “Made in the USA” labels will say Made in the USA
