Animal control officers say the victim was covered in blood after the dogs attacked PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - In what deputies describe as the worst mauling they've ever seen, two pit bulls entered a Wauna-area home via the pet door and attacked a woman in her bed.

Pierce County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Ed Troyer said a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier also entered the home in the 10600 block of 132nd St. Court NW through the dog door and the pit bulls attacked the terrier named Romeo.

The 59-year-old woman was in bed, in her room. Neighbors say she was sound asleep when the attack happened. She managed to get away, run to her car, lock herself in and call 911. Even after fighting off the dogs, she was in pretty bad shape.

Two pit bulls entered a Pierce County home and attacked a woman in her bed.

"Pretty much from head-to-toe, she was covered in blood," said Pierce County Animal Control officer Brian Bowman.

Troyer said firefighters locked the pit bulls in the house until deputies arrived. Officers had to use pepper spray and fight the dogs to get them into custody.

The woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, where she was listed in satisfactory condition. The terrier was taken to an animal hospital, where he died Tuesday afternoon.

The pit bulls were taken to the Pierce County Humane Society, where they will remain until the case is resolved.

The pit bulls also attacked a Jack Russell terrier named Romeo.

Troyer said the owner of the pit bulls has been identified and lives on the same street as the victim. KING 5 went to the home, but nobody answered the door. Neighbors say they have had problems in the past with the two pit bulls running wild.

Information will be given to prosecutors, who will decide what, if any, charges will be filed against the owners. Animal control officers say they will recommend gross misdemeanor charges at the very least.

“You think that is a good statistic? Do you really think there are more than one in nine pitts that are biters?”

Of course the difference is that one can really damage a person and the other isn’t powerful enough to.

Get the conviction...then sue...get a judgment...

and then start the collection procedures. (Evil grin with a whiff of burning sulfur)

The last dog that “bit” me was a yellow lab. Hunting pheasants, she got a two inch thorn straight in between two toes.

Her owner held her still while I grabbed the thorn. She “held” my hand, just to let me know that I’d best be quick about it.......

We’re still best of friends.........

Barring a situation where you need real protection why in gods name would you want an animal that could do that much damage if it ever went after a person?

A gun is for real protection. All a dog has to do is make enough noise to waken the owner. You don't need a dog was a weapon, just an alarm.

Those little dogs that so many people criticize as having a worse personality than a pit can at least be drop kicked across the room before they do too much damage.

Most conservatives would be against a *federal* law in regards to owning a pit bull. Telling American citizens what dog they can own is just not in the federal govt’s spectrum of constitutional responsibilities. Check out our Constitution some time. It’s a great read.

I can’t let any of this go by. As I’m typing this my Springer Spaniel is sleeping at my feet. I’ve never been bitten by a spaniel, but my neighbor had a half-coyote and half-terrier that would silently run up behind people and, unprovoked, sink it’s teeth into the back of people’s legs. That dog didn’t live long.

Our Jack male is of the mini-type, a puddin’ actually.

A lot of bark (really loud) but just 12 pounds. He lets us know when someones at the door. :)

He should be 10 pounds and we’re working on that. He’s a big time sleeper, kind of like a cat. He loves to cuddle and wants to be on a lap at all times. He hangs our with his 70 pound lab mix sis just fine.

I understand the standard-size Jacks are more energetic. We’re doing fine with our couch potato.

“then they could have shot the dogs.”

And the victim.

Sorry I didn’t mention why I pinged you to this thread.

You have Jacks, don’t you?

If not, I apologize wholeheartedly for the ping. :)

I wonder if the Jack ran in first, trying to get away form the pits, and after they were finished with him they attacked the woman.

Or a giant, mean Clydesdale name “Big Bud.”

They could have shot from the car. I don’t blame them for not getting out but why the owner was allowed to keep those animals after that is beyond me. Didn’t they realize what those dogs could have done if there had been a child around?

The day they threatened me, I was pushing a baby stroller with my firstborn in it. I don’t think she was more than a year old. She’s have been history and I’m sure I’d have been in bad shape. Those were huge dogs.

Jack Russell terriers are yappy ill-mannered vicious little POS dogs that should have been bred out of existence before they actually DID exist.

Once again, I'm glad that I own reptiles and can't see why the pet banners want to bother my reptiles when dogs are so much more dangerous. While big snakes and big lizards can hurt or kill a person, they just don't have the instincts or the anatomy to be as big a threat as the worst kinds of dogs. There are dogs that might be fun to own, but they will always be a bigger risk.

I agree with you, we do have too many laws. However, I see nothing wrong with writing a law protecting innocent people from being mauled to death while they should be sleeping peacefully in the beds at night. I’m getting tired of these mauling stories. Pit Bulls are bred to be mean and even when they look sweet and cudly that mean side can come out without any warning. Ask the family whose baby was killed by the sweet family pet. If nice people are having trouble with pit-bulls, then what about the gang bangers who train them to be mean? That’s a big part of the problem right there. I don’t know where you live, but in my part of the country, gang bangers and pit bulls are a problem and I don’t even live in a big city.

I understand completely what you are talking about. A few years ago one of my children was chased home by two pit bulls and the chase led right up to the front door. Luckily, the door wasn’t locked. That’s scary. It wasn’t too soon after that the local paper had a story of a woman being mauled while taking a walk in the neighborhood by a pit bull.
