Woman mauled by home-invading pit bulls

07:45 PM PDT on Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Animal control officers say the victim was covered in blood after the dogs attacked PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. - In what deputies describe as the worst mauling they've ever seen, two pit bulls entered a Wauna-area home via the pet door and attacked a woman in her bed.

Pierce County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Ed Troyer said a neighbor's Jack Russell terrier also entered the home in the 10600 block of 132nd St. Court NW through the dog door and the pit bulls attacked the terrier named Romeo.

The 59-year-old woman was in bed, in her room. Neighbors say she was sound asleep when the attack happened. She managed to get away, run to her car, lock herself in and call 911. Even after fighting off the dogs, she was in pretty bad shape.

Two pit bulls entered a Pierce County home and attacked a woman in her bed.

"Pretty much from head-to-toe, she was covered in blood," said Pierce County Animal Control officer Brian Bowman.

Troyer said firefighters locked the pit bulls in the house until deputies arrived. Officers had to use pepper spray and fight the dogs to get them into custody.

The woman was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, where she was listed in satisfactory condition. The terrier was taken to an animal hospital, where he died Tuesday afternoon.

The pit bulls were taken to the Pierce County Humane Society, where they will remain until the case is resolved.

The pit bulls also attacked a Jack Russell terrier named Romeo.

Troyer said the owner of the pit bulls has been identified and lives on the same street as the victim. KING 5 went to the home, but nobody answered the door. Neighbors say they have had problems in the past with the two pit bulls running wild.

Information will be given to prosecutors, who will decide what, if any, charges will be filed against the owners. Animal control officers say they will recommend gross misdemeanor charges at the very least.

It’s pretty annoying when you can’t even go in your own backyard in peace. It makes you a prisoner in your own home.

Isn’t there something that could be done legally? Noise ordinance or something?

I hate to see it take a mauling to get something done. It always bugged me that problems like that cannot be dealt with until someone gets hurt.

Vick’s case pretty much demonstrates what these dogs are primarily used for. It is irrational to assume pit bulls in your vicinity are safe for you, your kids, your pets.

Even the ones he tortured, because they wouldn't fight?

You sound like a good dog owner — with a level head. That being said, the “media hype” you talk about is more than media hype for me. I was in a situation where I was growled at by an unleashed, unsupervised Rottweiler who was immediately joined by an unleashed, unsupervised pit bull. Tell me about media hype.

Even what used to be good dogs, like Cocker Spaniels, have been known to get nasty from too much inbreeding.

So often it seems that a breed is destroyed by poor breeding once it becomes popular. Cocker spaniels, I think, were nearly destroyed as a breed from poor breeding after their popularity soared as the result of "Lady and the Tramp." After "101 Dalmatians," you had a lot of people running out to buy Dalmatians, then ending up turning them in to shelters. I suspect you now have a lot of poorly bred Chihuahuas as a result of their increased media exposure.

If they are snarling, charging, you can complain that you're worried the fence won't hold them--this is a nuisance and actionable as an "intentional tort"--

Wonder if you could find out who their insurance carrier is? They aren't renters, are they? So many pit owners are low lifes of no means to speak of...

I'll see your cutsie picture and raise you a couple of real pit bull pictures

We get enough crap from the media, I'd like to think we know better here. Following the link for the smaller picture back to its source I find no reference to that being a "pit bull" bite. I am unable to trace the link for the large pic back to its source so breed/type is indeterminate.

All dog bites are serious, some of course more so than others, and virtually all are preventable.
Here's one...

A GIRL aged four was recovering today after her face was ripped open by a dog she was trying to stroke.

But police said they were powerless to act because the attack happened on private property and the dog was not officially classed as “dangerous”.

Molly Malone needed plastic surgery on her cheek after being bitten by a ######## last Tuesday afternoon.
~snip~
“Our first call was to the police. An officer came to see Molly and was shocked by the damage to her face.
~snip~
“We have two dogs ourselves and we are animal lovers. But it has really damaged her face and my daughter is now permanently scarred, it only just missed her eye.”
~snip~
Last year doctors at Alder Hey’s A&E department said they were treating the equivalent of a child a day for injuries caused by dog attacks, with one in five needing further treatment on more serious wounds.

You can check the link for the breed of dog.
And please note with respect to the last paragraph that this is an area where "pit bulls" are banned

With regard to this thread's incident..

Contributing Factors

Breed capable of inflicting significant damage.
Irresponsible owner(s) and gross negligence...Loose dogs
Pack behavior
Sex of dogs...Unknown
Reproductive status...Unknown
Function of dogs...Unknown
Failure of Animal Control..."Neighbors say they have had problems in the past with the two pit bulls running wild."

I wonder if you'd "luvmypitt" if it did that to YOUR kid.

If you have to wonder that about a poster on this forum...I have to wonder about you

I think many breeds of dog can attack for no reason, but certain breeds inflict more damage because they were bred to fight and kill.

If a chihuahua goes beserk and attacks you a swift slap to the head will break its neck end of story, yet with a pitbull even a gunshot won't keep it down.

"I think the best thing a citizen can do at this point is to demand of our homeowners' insurers that they not cover certain breeds of dogs--that will identify the remaining pits as pets of the improvident and thus a danger."

Some insurers already have put your excellent idea into practice (look at the fine-print "Adendums" to your own policy -- you might be surprised...

First and foremost, I never said anything bad about Pits and completely understood your sick azz post....that’s why I responded!

If you are ever in TN, bring your little pit/pom/in-bred/whatever the hell breed you have and we’ll see which dog can out rat each other! You are no better than Vick, taking dogs to the freakin’ woods....

Every single one of them. Most don’t live next door to Vick, and there’s no way looking at a dog to tell the future.

Every single one of them should be considered dangerous. It’s the only rational approach.

They aren't the dog's "parents." They're its owners. There's a very big difference.

Dear, you're misinterpeting what the poster stated.

I agree with Cobra. If we didn’t have so many laws controlling us then there would be more of these menaces out of our yards, kids still alive as well as many fewer serious hospital calls.

I'm aware some don't insure pits and rotts--but all insurers need to do this, and it needs to be publicized, so that every person who owns one of these dogs is aware he is not insured, and everyone who sees the dogs knows the owner is not insured.

Perhaps a second fence with a declared free fire zone between.

I was thinking of an arclight, but my house is too close :)

“Yup. Just what we need, another friggin law. If you really like the governement running your life and protecting you, vote for Hillary Clinton.”

I would agree a law is needed that ALL dogs found running loose should be killed, at least after the second time they are caught. Owners can have one freebie. But the law(s) should be local only. And wanting such laws does not make one a liberal. It just makes one sick and tired of people who have no sense of responsibility for their pets.

I consider any unknown dog, of any apparent breed, to be dangerous, until I discover otherwise.

#1, I was responding to a poster who claimed that only cats and foxes don’t like Jack Russell Terriers. I am not a cat or a fox, and do not like the breed in question. See post #25.

#2, This thread is another pit bull bashing thread. You asked WTF after reading my Russell comment, and I explained myself. Pot, meet kettle kind of thing.

#3, AlGoreLand is not very high on my vacation destination list, but your friendly invitation will be kept in mind. I’m sure Mr. Zippy would love to make your canine a mommy.

#4, “Taking the dog to the woods” is a euphemism for having it put down.

I am unable to trace the link for the large pic back to its source so breed/type is indeterminate

Irrelevant as to the breed - the point being dog bites are especially disfiguring, and pit bulls are the number one biters. There are only three types of injury routinely defined as emergencies in plastic surgery: Cold hand, gunshot wound to the face and dog bite to the face

All dog bites are serious, some of course more so than others, and virtually all are preventable.

Bullsh!t. Unless you mean preventable by preemptive killing of the dogs. According to the plasticsurgery4u.com site 94% of dog bites are UNPROVOKED. That means not preventable to me.

...I have to wonder about you

You need to go back to reading comprehension class because some of the "dogs can do no wrong" posters on this thread need a wake up call. Frankly I think anyone whose screen name is "luvmypitt" just might take a dog over a child. I was on a thread the other day with some silly woman who said that no punishment was too severe for M Vick for his involvement in dog fighting. I told her to develop a sense of proportion, and the whinney b***h nattered on endlessly how dogs were better than people, and how I was basically a sh!t for not thinking so too. So I'd say that some of the posters here would love their dog more than their kids. At least that idiot would. I'd ping her, but I don't remember her name, and she isn't worth the trouble of looking back to see.
