You’re husband is absolutely correct: Mexico is a failure. That they are blessed with astounding natural resources almost any other nation would be able to “raise the ship” with, Mexico is so corrupt that they’re privileged class are determined, even with self-destruction imminent in the form of mass revolt, to continue screwing the lesser-halves by telling them their duty is to invade the US and send as much money back as possible. What boggles me is that so many Mexicans here maintain loyalty to a government that depends on them as revenue generators while providing them absolutely nothing.

Maybe they’re onto something.

I live near Houston and grew up half way between here and Corpus Christi.

Interestingly enough, I recently WAS an illegal alien in Mexico for a couple of days (purely accidental).

I support border watch etc. and ran for office partly on a campaign of sending a bill to foreign governments who have inmates in our local county jail. (lost BTW)

I am VERY much for enforcing the law. I am very much for punishing criminals.

I also believe that th US constitution is powerful enough to see us through this or just about any other time.

I know very well what the problems with corruption are. I remember when La Mafia wasn’t a Tejano music band but was the smugling ring that moved drugs from Mexico up along the coast to about Edna. The Bandito’s moved it from there up into Houston and surrounding.

I don’t know if La Mafia is still around or if M16 etc. have pushed them totally out...

Imagine only having a 300 mile border than an 1800 mile border to guard.

Imagine all the new welfare recipients.

Imagine the health care system stretched beyond repair.

Imagine making spanish the official language.

Imagine the money needed to bring our new state's infrastructure up to speed.

Imagine our education system completely overwhelmed with ADULTS who "want to learn".

That people in our government - who most certainly know the truth - who are acquiescing to such an outcome are some of the greatest traitors of all time that they would let that happen.

Well, Georgie boy, says mexico is a democracy to be celebrated.

Along with a "new America".

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on.
