Shot gun!? Methinks not, 454 Caslin maybe, or maybe a hand cannon (44 Mag). A shot gun might just pi$$ the bear off...even with double ought.

Not if loaded with slugs. They are devastating, just short ranged. But since the kids aren't out stalking the bears, well not most of them anyway, short range is good enough. At really short range, it doesn't actually matter much what the shotgun is loaded with, at least as long as it's hard as lead, or harder, and nearly as heavy.

Now that .44 mag, that might just PO the bear, unless shot placement was very good indeed, even then the bear might know she was dead until after she'd killed the shooter.

When hunting bear, I bring as much fire power as possible. A shot gun is not included in the mix. Slugs or no slugs.

In the fwiw department, your tag line is a good one.

Yep.....that’s what I carried when I was stationed up there. Such a rig carried with proper application of common sense keeps one a weee bit higher on the food chain in that arena. I know folks up there now in “company” housing that were at one time forbidden from having a firearm until a few polar bears decided it was nicer inside the crews quarters one evening ........ company policy is now ignored and almost everyone has at a minimum a 44mag sidearm.

My last trip up (years ago) I carried a Ruger redhawk w/ 5 inch bbl and Garretts Hammerhead ammo. Basic fashion must for the copper river. The guide we used had 2 dogs that were called “bear dogs”....they would harass but not chase a bear or get close enough to get hurt. But they were 4 legged alarm systems for us lower 48 tourist sorts.

Why not issue H & H double rifles? Anything above .375 would do the trick.

Issuing .577’s would be a bit tricky, though.

Based on the size of the barrel and knowing that the girls are not 7’ or taller, that is probably a rifle.

But you *are* hunting them. They aren't. First thing is stay away from the bears. If the bears aren't having that, then they shoot them, up close, cause if they aren't up close, they shouldn't be shooting them.

I tend to agree, and I had a bolt action shotgun for a season. 16 guage, don't recall the make. I was in 8th grade but could still work the bolt without dismounting the gun, but not all that fast. Didn't get a single pheasant with it though, but then again I didn't to shoot *at* all that many either. Got my first one the next season, with a 20 gauge pump on what the locals called "Kennedy Acres", conservation reserve land.

I'm guessing the five-figure price tag may have something to do with it. =]

It’s a bolt action rifle.

As I said, the reporter wouldn’t know one gun from another, but that wouldn’t keep him from writing about it.
