Breaking News-Vick Attorney Says Star Quarterback Will Plead Guilty in Dogfighting Case
Fox News ^ | 20 Aug 07 | AP

The lead attorney for pro football star Michael Vick said Monday that the Atlanta Falcons quarterback will plead guilty to dogfighting and related charges and will "accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made."

Billy Martin, heading up Vick's legal team, issued the following statement:

"After consulting with his family over the weekend. Michael Vick ask that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with Federal prosecutors regarding the charges pending against him. Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of Guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologizes again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter. The legal team and Mr. Vick will appear in court in Richmond on August 27th."

The statement apparently took federal officials by surprise.

Jim Rybicki, a spokesman for U.S. States Attorney Chuck Rosenberg, said he had not heard of an agreement in the Vick case, and that he was trying to reach prosecutors.

Vick's attorneys hope to hear back from National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell's office sometime Monday about Vick's career options, sources said.

Mistakes?!?!?! Putting antifreeze in your windshield washer fluid is a mistake. Killing dogs in the fashion he did is disgusting and shows just what type of person he really is. An animal that should be in a cage.

Should be a pretty short conversation.

Agreed.

Those type of "mistakes" are better defined as "criminal activity."

Well, that should be interesting, considering he lied to Goodell's face.

“Michael wishes to apologizes again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter”

Lock him in a cage with some pits bulls and make him apologize face to face.

This is the sort of smarmy crap that drives me nuts. Forcing dogs to fight to the death is NOT a "mistake." Torturing dogs to death is NOT a "mistake." That we allow this sort of garbage talk to be honored in court is our shame and our country's failure. Mr. Vick should be sent to prison for the maximum allowable time for such an offense and upon his release never allowed within one mile of any sports arena.

Yeah, the NFL isn’t going to let Vick scramble out of this one. If he came clean with the commish back in April, that may have been one thing. But he is only sorry now that the Feds have him surrounded and backed into a corner. He will be in jail at least a year I would guess and his NFL ban will be longer than that I assume.

I wanted a trial. I wanted the gory details of dogfighting beamed into America’s livingroom nightly so no one could deny the ugly brutality of the ‘sport’. I believe that would have ended Vick’s career for good. No matter what the ‘deal’ turns out to be, Vick got off lightly.

I'd settle for having a pit bull chase him out of the courthouse.

Now that's where things are really going to get interesting. I wonder what names he's going to let drop.

Check me, but just because he wants to plead guilty doesn’t mean the US Attorney has to accept it, does it?

I guess I am just confused by not hearing the the US Attnt’s office in response.

Personally, I’d like to see the US Attny decide (s)he wants to move ahead with a trial, slap Vick with RICO charges and drive the legal stake through the still beating heart of any future career he may have left.

In short, a deal doesn’t satisfy me....not that anyone *asked* me. :o>

The only problem would be that a lot of people would wonder if dogfighting is worse that rape. Rapists get off easier in the NFL.

It would be a debate we don’t want to have.
