GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands Hurricane Dean spared the Cayman Islands the worst of its fury on Monday as it headed for a collision course with Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, sending tourists fleeing for the airports and locals searching for higher ground.
Dean was already a powerful Category 4 storm as it raked the Cayman Islands. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it could grow into a monstrous Category 5 hurricane before slashing across the Yucatan Peninsula and emerging in the Gulf of Campeche, dotted with oil rigs.
Dean was several days from Texas and its path still uncertain, but the state is already saturated after an unusually rainy summer and officials were taking no changes emergency operations centers opened, prison inmates were moved inland, and sandbags distributed.
The Mexican resort city of Cancun began evacuations and arranged for extra flights to help tens of thousands of tourists leave before Dean's arrival. The hotel zone was quiet on Monday, nearly all guests gone.

The Caribbean hurricane season lasts from June through the end of October. Most hurricanes occur in September, with August being the second most frequent month. I would never go anywhere near the Yucatan or the Caribbean in the summer or early fall. Not only do you risk a ruined trip, and disaster, but even if there isn’t a hurricane is it unbelievably hot and humid. I made that mistake once, back in the 80s, and I won’t make it again. Not a summer place.
Hurricane Dean spared the Cayman Islands - Many offshore accounts held by wealthy Republican donors spared. Some experts cite evidence of the Carl Rove weather machine in engineering the near miss.
Forget the Caribbean. Take a cruise in the Baltic Sea instead.
Try St. Thomas or St. Croix . I don’t think you even need a passport like going to peurto Rico .
If the track of the hurricane is anywhere near correct; Cancun won't get much more than rain and no high winds. - tom
"We`re going to Jamaica, we`re going to Cancun, we`re going to Houston and YEEEEAAAARGH!!!!"
By the way, anyone know if Bush has been blamed for this yet?
I hope it flattens Mexico.
I don’t. They get enough money from US already.
You are correct.
Only the gods know what Bush will send in aid with our tax money.
I will have to think of somemthing else.
Have you noticed it has not hit anything the media and forecasters have said it would.
If it does flatten Mexico, then there will be long term jobs galore. Let’s see who leaves to go home to help out.
Jobs Mexicans won’t do....
Okay...Here it goes:
I hope the hurricane takes a different route and flattens Washington, D.C.
As long as it stays away from Cabo, I don’t care. I will be there in 4 weeks. I can’t wait, I think I can taste the Margarita’s already.
www.weatherundeground.com is usually spot on most of the time.
First this storm was "aiming" for Jamaica, and missed. Then it was "aiming" for the Cayman Islands and missed.
I am beginning to think that this storm has pretty poor aim!
