Oakland police put the main suspect in the killing of a journalist investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery in an interrogation room with the bakery's leader after the two were arrested, then left them alone and didn't record the conversation, sources close to the case said Friday.
The suspect, bakery handyman Devaughndre Broussard, promptly confessed to police after the late-night session Aug. 3 with the bakery's leader, Yusuf Bey IV, said two law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
An attorney for Broussard, 19, called the police tactic highly unusual and said that without a tape recording of the session, there is no way to know whether Broussard may have been coerced into confessing.
Authorities say Broussard told them he killed Oakland Post Editor Chauncey Bailey because he was angry the journalist was investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery's financial difficulties.
Bey, 21, and Broussard had been arrested in police raids that followed the Aug. 2 slaying of Bailey on a downtown street. Bey was later charged with an unrelated kidnapping and has not been accused in the killing; Broussard has been charged with murder.
Bey and Broussard were in a room together for about 15 minutes at Oakland police headquarters, according to the law enforcement sources. Police later described it as "an investigative technique."
Within minutes after the encounter, police returned to tape a statement in which Broussard allegedly admitted to having killed Bailey, 57.
Assistant Police Chief Howard Jordan declined to comment Friday on the interview with Broussard or Bey's involvement.
Broussard's lawyer, LeRue Grim, said Thursday that his client had been pressured by an unnamed bakery official to "take the fall" for the shooting and make a false confession.

This is a major public case that is going to be under close scrutiny. Wouldn't you would think that they might consider that before they put an incompetent in charge?
Or.......they now have a guy with only two options, take the fall or testify that Bey asked him to take the fall.
If he goes for the second option.....and if the police can corroborate.....then good-bye Mr Bey.........
Dumb? Maybe just going along to get along. After all we wouldn't want to upset our muslim brothers. They might do something terrible.
Or else it was taped and didn't have the desired info so it was erased.

This is just two lib groups killing each other. I believe in rule of law, but since they've brought this on themselves......reap what you sow.
