Anne Arundel County officials said they will sever ties with government contractors that employ illegal immigrants, wading into controversial territory that has prompted lawsuits in other jurisdictions across the country.
County Executive John R. Leopold issued an executive order this week that will require businesses to sign an affidavit swearing they do not employ people living in the country illegally. Evidence that a company has hired illegal immigrants would constitute a "material breach of contract," allowing the county to drop the contractor from the job.
Leopold said the federal government "hypocritically" tolerates such practices, but Anne Arundel will not. "Any company that is complying with federal law and not hiring illegal immigrants will have nothing to be concerned about," said Leopold, a Republican.

Kinda surprised to see it in Maryland! Of course AA County is still rather conservative.
Do you know where we can get a copy of a model ordinance, so we can have our local councilmen introduce this proposal?
There is hope, more and more leaders standing up and demanding a fair playing field for all contractors. Great news!!
I live in the next county over (Howard) and although we’re still only 55/45 Dem to GOP...I would be surprised to see my county follow suit.
All right, John Leopold! Apparently, not EVERY vote I made last November was wasted!
I love these reports!
If the Feds won’t do it then WE WILL one city/county at a time.
Send that councilman to congress!
My tag line.
I still am trying to understand how those Hazelton PA laws were ruled “unconstitutional” by a Federal judge. The ruling made absolutely no sense.
Maryland’s quack Gov, “O’Mallard” himself is sure to step in.
Are you in Anne Arundel County?
House Passes Drake Amendment to Eradicate Sanctuary Cities
...Under section 642(a) of IIRIRA, a Federal, State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict, any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual.
Guess Arundel finally read it.
As one of Mr. Leopold’s proud constituents, I just sent him a congratulatory, atta boy-type e-mail.
His public e-mail address, in case any other Anne Arundel County residents are interested, is exleop00@aacounty.org.
Yes.
I’m next door to you in Howard Co.
Anne Arundel is not conservative at all. Maybe more so than Montgomery County, but it wouldn’t fit in down south
By Maryland standards it is. And it went for Bush in ‘00 and ‘04.
It certainly is by "Merlin" standards. You should have seen the roaring crowds when former Governor of Alabama Roy Moore, the "Ten Commandments Judge", came to speak in Severn.
There is a whole bunch of people in "AA Canny" that elected Don Dwyer to the legislature to lead the fight for traditional marriage, for which he has taken enormous abuse from the blue counties. He is a business associate of the lawyer Michael Peroutka, who was a presidentlal candidate in 2004 for the Constitution Party, and who has a big following in AA. Together, Peroutka and Dwyer run Institute on the Constitution, which Wikipedia calls "paleoconservative", probably because it teaches American history as it happened, not as it has been revised by political correctness.
I have been living away from AA county for several years now.
Are you serious? LEOPOLD is the county executive? I remember when he wore a white jacket with the word LEOPOLD in bright red letters all over. He stood on Rt. 100 and waved at the passing cars!
He’d been running for office almost forever.
I could tell some stories about Leopold and some lovely lasses that he likes to hang around with.
So glad I moved from neighboring Prince George’s County where a crackdown on illegal immigration would never happen.
BTW, Prince George’s county has the second highest crime rate in Maryland, right after Baltimore City. Similar demographics and politics. Go figure.
So far I am real pleased with Leopold’s policies here in Anne Arundel County. My vote was not a waste, like it was for so many years in PG County.
I like AA County. Live in Howard county now. Howard’s not bad, actually, I like it a lot. It’s more liberal than AA, but not to the point of projectile vomiting, either, and nowhere near as bad as PG or Montco, or Baltimore City. Baltimore County is OK as well.
