Thank you for the info, CG-R! I keep hearing on the cable news stations (with seismologists reporting) that there has not been an earthquake(s). Guess I should stop watching this stuff!

“he insists that the families must be informed first so that they get information from him and not from the press.”

Only a complete idiot wouldn’t do that! He gets no points from me for that.
Sago mine was the same. Families were told first. That is SOP.

I’m still confused over the cause of these seismic events. The owner keeps saying the quakes caused the wall collapses and the seismologists keep calling them mining-induced quakes.

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg, the mine or the quake?

It is just my impression of they guy. I have said like 4 times that I could be wrong about him. Maybe I have worked for too many arrogant bastards who were in over their heads.

Enough about him. I am much more concerned for the hero rescuers in the mine.

Well thank God they weren’t trapped!

Good question. The history of quake activity in Utah might answer that question. Now if the mine was out here in CA, saying the quake caused the collapse would sound reasonable.

I just saw that too- I know the media was guiding us in the direction that rescue workers were injured as opposed to the original trapped miners being rescued but I was praying they were wrong. So little real info has been released (I totally understand why w/media the way they are & the Sago fiasco) I was hoping it might turn out to be good news. Sorry it seems not to be.

Prayers for all involved, their family and friends, that they may have the strength they need to face this terrible trying time.

I have the greatest respect for anyonme who doesn’t know how to deal with the media. I will never understand why people subject themselves to the media at horrible times in their lives.

Thanks. Looks like the "area" has a fair amount of seismic activity all the time.

Mine "blow outs" as they are called in the East happen from time to time ~ have you seen any seismic readings for such events?

Reporters have counted 10 ambulances, now.

In defense of the owner, the media started pointing fingers at him right away. He got defensive.

He was a coal miner himself, before he mortgaged his house and bought his first mine.

There appears to have been another blowout. This time, the drilling has been overseen by the head of the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Everything humanly possible has been done to drill safely. The mountain shifts, and the walls explode in. That is the “seismic activity.” It is not caused by mistakes of the mining company.

I’m really impressed that the owner (1) has not left the site and says he will not until the miners are out (he’s not a spring chicken and must be exhausted) and (2) he insists that the families must be informed first so that they get information from him and not from the press.

I am also with you! I guess everyone’s impressions are different but I just don’t see him as arrogant.

“The results of our analysis show that most of the seismic wave energy is consistent with an underground collapse,

however the cause of the mine collapse is still unknown.”

Huh?

I think you’re wrong about him. The guy is in his 80’s, give him a break. He’s doing the best he can in very bad circumstances. I think he cares very much about those trapped miners. He has said he himself was a miner and in the mining business for 50 years. And I beg to differ with those who say he’s not that bright. I think the man is exceedingly bright and thorough with his review of what is taking place each day. You aren’t in the mining business for 50 years without being extremely knowledgeable about your subject matter.

Yesterday he was crying at one of the news conferences. He’s getting by on very little sleep. He’s 80 plus. Good thing he’s a big, burly Burl Ives kind of guy, who looks like when younger was strong as a bull. He’s got that thick neck and broad chest. I like the guy. He’s a one of a kind type of guy. As to the seismic activity, others besides him have been calling those bumps “seismic events” which they are. Now, Murray wants to take it further and say the whole original collapse was caused by an earthquake, which may be a stretch. However, the verdict is still out. Regardless, Bob Murray didn’t cause the collapse, mining is dangerous, and you take your chances when you sign up for the job of miner.

The MSM, on the other hand, wants to instantly assign blame. They are like vultures up there right now, waiting to pounce on whomever they can point the finger at. With few exceptions, they make me sick. I’m glad Bob Murray has kept them under control as much as possible. Good for him.
