The mine owner has not been in charge of the rescue. The entire thing has been supervised by MSHA. Some of the men injured tonight were MSHA employees who were in the mine supervising the rescue.
It has been slow because the same mountain movement that caused the initial collapse has continued. MSHA has been requiring that everything humanly possible be done to prevent further collapses. But, even with MSHA experts standing right on top of the process, they couldn’t prevent the new blowout.
I totally agree with you about the mine owner. He is really not the spokesman that should be out front in this difficult situation.
AirMed 4 enroute to Price airport, has been released (they aren’t needed) and is returning to Salt Lake.
Am I the only one to notice that Robert Murray’s eyes seem to be getting smaller and smaller with every press conference? Does anybody know the medical reason for this?
Anyway, prayers for these people.
I think this is a terrible tragedy. But look what the rescue team has done..built roads on the side of a mountain to get heavy drilling equipment up the side in a short amount of time. Tried to excavate an area that is ever shifting..to the point the rescuers have been hurt and killed. I think everyone involved in this rescue mission is sincere, dedicated and heartbroken.
Lack of sleep? Exhaustion?

There was a nearby ‘bump’ that shook the walls where the rescuers were working — and brought down debris on them.

A second death has just been confirmed.
