President Bush Announces Intention to Appoint Dungy to Council TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Tony Dungy took his own advice. When the President of the United States calls, the Colts' Head Coach once told Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, you pretty much have to answer.

Now, Dungy has done just that.

Dungy, who in February coached the Colts to their first Super Bowl title in 36 years and who this summer became a New York Times best-selling author, will serve in the Bush Administration, the White House announced Tuesday.

President George W. Bush on Tuesday announced his intention to appoint Dungy to be a Member of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation.

The appointment has a term of two years with a time commitment of two in-person meetings per year and quarterly phone conversations with assigned committees.

Tony Dungy's book, Quiet Strength, is also No. 1 on the NY Times' bestsellers list for hardcover, non-fiction. It's a very solid book, far above average in the sports genre.

I read Tony's’ book also and I felt as if we were having a conversation over a cup of coffees.

“It’s a very solid book”

Solid book from a solid man.

There’s not a more deserving person for this duty. Which is ironic - I also liked Mike Ditka and they are polar opposites.

His Colts beat my favorite football team da Bears. This has got to stop. Hope he is distracted enough by this appointment to loose the next SB to da Bears. Then we wouldn’t have to look back to Mike Ditka’s 1985 Bears one of the all time greatest teams to take the field. They would have had a perfect season except they lost to the Dolphins because of a screwy bounce of a kicked ball.

A decent human and capable. Coaching NFL has got to be, at least somewhat, like playing tournament chess while herding cats.

That and Da Bears kept depending upon Sweetness to carry the team and Miami had him covered.

This is gonna be a tough year for the Colts. As with most SB winning teams free agency snagged several good players.

Da Bears are gonna hafta get rid of Grossman if they want to get a win. As it is you’re never sure which Bears QB steps onto the field - Grossman or Grossed-Out!

Some teams have a bail bondsman on staff. Luckily the Colts aren’t that kind of team. Now the NBA Indiana Pacers that’s another story.

If I were Bush I’d be careful about appointing athletes to ceremonial positions. Remember all the embarassment caused to Bush the Elder by a certain Magic Johnson?

Grossman is such a bad quarterback? Lead the team to a 13-3 season in 2006 by far the best in the NFC. How can that performance be criticized?

Bear dominance will continue and with the Colts missing key players look to the Bears as World Champs this season.

Because they won games in spite of their QB. If the Bears had a better QB during that SB, there might have been a different outcome. The Bears last year were like the Ravens the year they won their SB. They got there and won it without a high-quality QB.

He doesn’t have to worry about Tony Dungy. He’s as good as they come.

Not worried about Dungy, specifically. Only worried about these symbolic appointments. All you need is an athlete with an agenda and you’ve got headaches.

Yeah what he said.

When Devin Hester the kickoff and punt returner is the most dangerous player on the field for the Bears - I mean opening kickoff = quick TD

Agreed. I just think the world of Dungy. He’s going to do some remarkable things for this country when he retires from football. I don’t see him entering politics but he has the platform to do many great things for so many people.

Grossman has all the tools, he will only get better this season.
