See A Tagger? Police Say Don't Confront Them

CBS) PICO RIVERA, Calif. Authorities advised the public Tuesday not to confront taggers, in response to the fatal shooting of a Pico Rivera woman who flashed her car lights at one.

"We want to be contacted as soon as possible, with any kind of information -- license plate numbers or description of the suspects," sheriff's Deputy Johnnie Jones said. "Do not put yourself at any danger or risk because some of these folks can be very dangerous."

Maria Hicks, 58, flashed her vehicle lights and honked her horn at a male she saw tagging a wall at San Gabriel River Parkway and Woodford Street shortly before 10 on Friday night, said Deputy Maribel Rizo.

As she followed the tagger who was walking away from the wall, a gray compact car with an unknown number of male suspects, drove up behind her and someone fired several rounds at her, Rizo said.

Hicks died of a wound shortly before noon Monday, according to the sheriff's department.

Neighborhood residents repainted the wall where Hicks first saw the tagger and placed lit candles and flowers there.

No arrests have been made. The suspect is described as "very dangerous," according to NBC4.

Hicks was a grandmother of eight and described as a quiet and caring person.

Hicks "paid a high price for the idea of law and order," said Hicks’ brother, Ruben Quintero, an English literature professor at Cal State Los Angeles. "I think we shouldn't give up on that idea since she has already paid the price. We should hold onto this idea of being civilized."

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

Punks, they’ve been hanging around Maplewood Square and jumping senior citizens as they leave the convenience store. An adult at our Italian Feast last weekend recognized one and clocked him.

Yet another argument for sending all gang members to Gitmo.

Hope you like ‘em. I tried the sand grips, but they felt kind of gritty to me. I like the rubber much better.

On the tac light: For me, I like the rail-mounted tac light better on the full sized models. I have an M-3 on my Glock 22.

I propose a few common sense measures to confront this problem...

Licensing and registration of all spray paint purchases

A five day waiting period and one can a month limit

No cans larger than 12 mL or 20 psi of pressure

Remember, this is for the children.

A 'tagger' is a member of our richly diverse culture that specializes in custom painting walls, concrete bridges and railroad boxcars.

Not long ago I was walking trough a part of Brookline,MA (proud home of Mike Dukakis...very liberal and very,*very* rich) with my sister and noticed some graffitti on the mailbox of a very expensive house.I commented to my sister that the homeowners of that area will be thrilled to see the arrival of that "richly diverse culture".

The city should just run spray trucks through every neighborhood every day. If there is graffitti, spray it, no matter where it is. Paint the town gray.

If Graffitti lasts for less than a day, nobody bothers to put it up.

"A gang in my city has moved on from spray painting to carving their logo MW (Maplewood) into cars throughout the city."

Idiots! "MW"? Don't they realize that Maplewood is one word, and should be abbreviated simply as "M"? What a needless doubling of effort!

So now grandmas get shot for flashing their lights at someone? That’s not what I would call a “confrontation”.

"B-b-b-but I thought tagging was just a multicultural self-expression of art and free speech!.........taggers don’t kill people! Guns kill people!........"

Last week, we had an incident here around N'Awlins where a "warm and creative" young man (per family) was accidently struck by a police vehicle while fleeing the site where he was spray-painting a floodwall.

Said his aunt: "He loved to paint. He'd been doing that since he was the age of 8. He was very, very good. He's talented."

If he was so talented, maybe he could have painted a surface he owned!

So we’re allowed to use high-powered rifles? It can be a new sport. If one of them is on a freeway overpass sign, that’s extra points if he falls on the freeway.

We need some kinda laser device that you could aim at the spraycan, and make it explode! Thereby “taggin’” the tagger.

I don't shoot IDPA, and I haven't actually shot IPSC in over a year, but I prefer TruGrip pre-cut grip tape for my G34.

http://www.ericwesselman.com/store/FAQS.html

I'm also a fan of a henie rear sight mated with a Dawson Precision 019-002 fibre optic front sight. You get a good bit of light on both sides of the front sight which helps acquire a good sight picture quickly even when you are shooting indoors or in the shade and the fibre optic doesn't work as well.

Of course everyone has their own preferences, so you should get what you like.

Where I live in California all the subdivisions have huge concrete walls around them. They are a prime target for taggers so they plant huge bushes (usually Oleander) in front of the walls to keep taggers away.
Our city/county has a graffiti removal program. You call them with the location and they go out and paint over the tags. They are very busy.
