China Bans ‘Rush Hour 3' (calls Jackie Chan film Anti-Chinese)

Apparently, the No. 1 mid-August movie hit in the U.S. is not going to make it to the big screen in China.

The communist Chinese government has tagged Jackie Chan's "Rush Hour 3" with a "fundamentally anti-Chinese" label and banned the big box-office hit.

Chinese officials claim to be upset with a family that is depicted in the film as having links to organized crime.

It could be the real reason the Chi-coms are peeved is the fact that Chan is living proof that dreams really do come true — in a free market, that is.

The action movie comic pulled himself out of poverty and overcame his difficulties at school. He apparently still can't read or write but discipline and hard work go a long way when you have liberty lighting your path.

Chan's got a huge fan base and is loved the world over — except for the bullies in Beijing.

Speaking of Hollywood faves, it's back to the big screen for Michelle Pfeiffer. In her movie roles, she's a villain times two.

In "Hairspray," Pfeiffer plays mean ex-beauty queen Velma Von Tussle opposite John Travolta, who dresses up as a "big beautiful woman" for his Edna Turnblad role.

And in "Stardust," Pfeiffer plays a wicked witch who's on a search for eternal youth.

Speaking of eternal youth, Michelle seems to have found it in real life.

She's also hung onto something else that in Tinseltown is quite rare — her modesty.

It turns out that Pfeiffer passed on the starring role of the film "Basic Instinct."

Why?

Because she didn't want to bare it all for the camera.

Had she taken the movie part, Pfeiffer would have played scheming seductress Catherine Tramell. Instead, Sharon Stone took the risqué role and the rest is sordid cinematic history.

"I just couldn't do that one, because of the sexual parts, the nudity. My father was still alive. I'm kind of prudish," Pfeiffer is quoted as saying by Contactmusic.

The star adds, "I am not that uninhibited about my body. I'm modest."

How about showing these Sinos some Charlie Chan, followed by some of the old Mr. Magoo cartoons with his Chinese cook.

I’m sure they ban anything with the word “Rush” in it. Can’t be too careful.

Hmmm, I wonder how many pirated bootleg copies they will make and export after banning it?

Jackie Chan already sticks his nose up their behinds. He disparages Taiwan’s elections and has played the puppet during the 10/1 celebrations often enough (he used to go to Taiwan for the 10/10 RoC celebration).
This has nothing to do with kissing ass, but they just dont want to send dollars back to US.

I'm surprised, but I probably shouldn't be considering his early life. I have heard at a young age he was sent by his parents to the Peking Opera under terms that would be considered slavery.

There is a commentary track on the Drunken Master DVD which talks about his school days, and how the harsh conditions made him what he is as an adult.

In the mid-1990s there was a boom in the HK film market finally breaking big into America. Jackie Chan, John Woo, Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, and others finally got recognized for their Hong Kong film work.

They were looking at their options after the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to the Chi-Coms. There were a number of anti-Communist references in these films and the looming handover.

Jackie is popular there but they won’t approve of all his films.

Meanwhile American media (like those at Today) thought it was a wonderful thing to celebrate.

I’m betting they won’t ban (any) companies there, from making a zillion bootleg copies of the movie for export...

Why are we putting up with this?

Imagine there are 500 letters in the alphabet to memorize.

That’s the (minimum) considered to be literate, if I am not mistaken.

There are actually several thousand more, after that.

Oh, and many of those are written in two different ways, depending whether the flag you see nearby is red with yellow stars, or looks more like a US flag with one big white star on blue, against a solid red background...

He probably doesn’t have enough time, he’s too busy being a huge star. :)

I’m sure its already out in every single pirated DVD stand in China. Those are on almost every corner. Little carts that show up at night. Hard to shut out a movie nowadays.

“Wow. Jackie can’t read? He is a master of everything else.”

Lots of people can’t read traditional Chinese over there. I’ve been told that to be literate enough to read a newspaper you need to know 2000 characters (each essentially a word). To really know the language you need to know a lot more than that.

This is kind of weird, since Chan is one of the Communist government’s biggest boosters.
