Measure banning Blue Angels from San Francisco skies is rejected
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/14/7 | Wyatt Buchanan, Chronicle Staff Writer

San Francisco's skies are safe for the Blue Angels. A Board of Supervisors committee Monday rejected a measure that would have called for a permanent end to the high-flying, aerobatic show that happens yearly during Fleet Week.

The committee voted 2-1 to table the measure, authored by Supervisor Chris Daly, effectively killing it. But Daly, who cited public safety and noise concerns as his reasons for proposing the ban, promised to continue pushing it.

"We've been lucky here in San Francisco," Daly said, noting that 26 crew members have died in incidents since 1946 when the Navy formed the flight demonstration team.

In April, a Blue Angel F/A-18 Hornet jet crashed during a performance in Beaufort, S.C., killing the pilot, injuring eight people and damaging several homes.

"Think about what would happen if there was a crash in San Francisco. Obviously, there would be significant loss of life beyond losing a pilot," said Daly, who added that the crash in South Carolina prompted him to seek the ban.

But the other members of the Government Audit and Oversight Committee - supervisors Sean Elsbernd and Michela Alioto-Pier - were not convinced, saying that the measure failed to account for the economic impact of visitors who come specifically for the show and noted that no one with expertise about the risks of the event testified at the hearing.

"(The measure) is a little fly-by-night, 'let's do this because we think it might not be safe,' " said Alioto-Pier, who said she was contacted by hundreds of city residents on the issue and most wanted the Blue Angels to stay.

A spokesman for the Navy said the Federal Aviation Administration consults with the Blue Angels on every show about the potential risks of performing certain maneuvers. ...

If he is so worried about protecting the citizens of San Fransicko, perhaps he should ban homosexuality considering the tens of thousands of SF residents that have died from AIDS.

Daley met his wife while both were at a “Youth Meeting” in Havana.

The Frisco board of supes didn’t slap Daly down because they disagree with him. They gave him the public backhand for standing up in a meeting and intimating that Newsom is a crack head.

Reading Daly's Wikipedia page, it seems that Daly is so far left he's attacking other SF liberals for not being as far moonbat liberal progressive as he is.

A lot of estrogen in that family!

They are not buzzing the city. They have safety rules on altitude and such.

What asinine thinking. This effiminate little loser is implying that Blue Angels are flying the equivalent of WWI fighters patched together with duct tape & baling wire.

But then again, that's what we'd end up with if dhimmocratic ninnies like Daly are put in charge of our military budget.

Admit it, Daly, you hate the military and all it stands for.

I watched them one year from a boat right on the SF waterfront. A single plane broke formation and headed over the golden gate. I watched him instead of the formation. He came in from the west gaining speed right down to 10 feet above the water. As he crossed the waterfront 100 feet in front of us a halo of condensed air formed around the cockpit, an unbelievable sight. Only after he passed did we hear him. I will never forget that sight.

Why does he not ban hippie druggies and queers.

Far more of them have died in San Francisco.

How about homeless bums? more of them die than the Blue Angels.

I was dining in a little dive Mongolian BBQ restaurant downtown during Fleet Week a few years ago, and I felt a small pang of pity for our nation’s enemies when an F-18 thundered overhead. As stunning as the noise was, I thought that it must be even more stunning when it’s coupled with the knowledge that they’re coming to kill you, and a real bummer to die with dirty underpants.

San Francisco can block the American military from their skies when they have an air force capable of doing so. I don’t think they’ll have such a thing for some time.

“Safety my brookdale. These leftists just hate the military.”

I agree. I just wish they had the balls to come out and say it!

He is working directly with Code Pink and other liberal military-hating organizations to accomplish this. He can say whatever he likes.

I saw them up close and personal as they took off from Nashville airport a couple of years ago.

A beautiful sight.

I thought San Francisco declared its self “military free” a couple years ago - banning all military presence. They still have a Fleet Week?

The U.S. military should boycott San Francisco.
Even if the city is invaded by the Chi-coms.

Even if the Big One hits and they need assistance.

I’m surprised there wasn’t a resolution to ban Fleet Week.

Fleet™ is a product that may be popular there....?

Seriously, when I lived in the Marina, in a 3rd (top) floor apt, one of these jets flew down low, right over the top of my bldg, and right over my head. I couldn't believe it. I could read the numbers on the side of the aircraft. It was HUGE. They have no business being that low, where they're skimming the tops of buildings. This happened two years ago. Last year they weren't quite as low.
