Several agencies announced on Monday that they will close their facilities, including all Big Island public schools, on Tuesday because of Hurricane Flossie.
The Department of Education announced that the closure will also affects public charter schools and the two adult schools in Hilo and Kona, officials said.
State Civil Defense officials recommended the closings, the DOE said.
The University of Hawaii at Hilo and the Big Island community colleges said they will close on Tuesday.
Officials at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park said they would close a number of areas of the park in response to the hurricane as well.

Doesn't look good does it. Usually they hit the lee of the big volcanoes and spin off to the west.

Any Hurricane in the area is to be taken seriously. Living in paradise does come with a price.
Many of the schools closed are also evacuation centers. The southern part of the Big Island is the most sparsely populated area and always gets the brunt of the storms approaching from the southeast.
It’s been dry throughout most of the island this year and some heavy rainfall would be welcomed.

On Maui: Winds picking up strong from the South west but still clear sky. Tue. will tell us more and Wednesday is supposed to be the big day if it is to hit us at all. If the path stays as is and does not come any further north we will get some wind and rain (which we could really use right now) but if it comes any more to the north tomorrow we could be in for some damage. Everyone is watching and preparing but no panic that I can see. Aloha from Maui

Wow, looks like it could bash the leeward side all the way up the islands. I recently moved from a beach place on the west side of Kauai. I was perpetually fascinated by the big surf, but the thunderous sound often made me wonder if/when the ocean would become one with my living room. And somedays it crept uncomfortably close. Yikes. I sure miss the place, though.
Stay safe out there!!!

Yes . . . hoping it won’t turn north like Iniki did.
Oahu, here. But son & many friends on Big Isle, where
I lived for 18 years.
Thanks for the ping, George76.

Thanks for the report.
We hope that you are ok.
Hopefully you do not get too much water nor wind.

The last CD report here said to expect high winds and surf as early as tomorrow morning. CD is also closing all schools tomorrow.
I'm not going anywhere since I'm on an island but I'm cleaning up my lanai for a change.
(Now, should I sweep it too......or let the winds take care of that?)

We have friends who went thru Iniki in Kauai.
There still are some hotels in Kauai that were never re-built ?

Let the wind take care of it, the broom is no match. :-)
Sweeping the lanai on Kauai was a losing battle. All I did was smear red dirt everywhere. :-(

Good advice......now back to rounding up my geckos!

No sweeping! Isn’t that what hurricanes are for? Got everything nailed down? Put under cover?
