Welcome Congressman Duncan Hunter - LIVE Thread (virtual Free Republic press Conference)
From San Diego, CA | 8/13/07 | Duncan Hunter/Freepers

Posted on 08/13/2007 1:24:44 PM PDT by pissant

To members of Free Republic and friends, I would like to introduce a candidate for President of the United States and the current congressman from the 52nd district of California, Duncan Hunter!! To Americans who value the patriotism and missions of our Armed Forces, to those who want to put fear into the hearts of our adversaries from Beijing to Tehran, to those who value the rule of law when it comes to illegal immigration, to those who realize that the unborn deserve full legal protection beginning at conception, to those who believe Peace through Strength is far more than a motto, to those who do not like giving communist China unfettered access to our markets while they cheat at every turn, to those who want to halt and reverse losses of US sovereignty to global entities, and to those who want the GOP to return to Reaganism, Mr. Hunter is the Best choice.

Congressman Hunter currently is the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee, after spending the previous 4 years as its chair. He is an original co-sponsor of the Fair Tax bill and he is the author of the Secure Borders bill, signed by President Bush in 2006, which mandates 800+ miles of double fence across the smuggling corridors of the SW. He also is the man who has led the fight against NAFTA’s Mexican truckers having free reign on our roads, has forced congressional oversight of the executive branch’s ‘Security and Prosperity Partnership’ with Canada and Mexico, and was instrumental in saving our military intelligence officers from having to jump through bureaucratic hoops unrelated to combat.

A Vietnam combat Veteran himself, he currently has a son in the Marine Corps, Capt. Duncan Duane Hunter who is busy hunting jihadis in Afghanistan after two tours in Iraq. Congressman Hunter has been the anti-dote to the liberals in Congress doing their damndest to cut and run from the battlefield. Mr. Hunter knows that this war is our generation’s calling, and “the only way we can leave is to WIN”.

Below are 15 questions we compiled last month on Free Republic, which we sent to Congressman Hunter a few weeks ago. They are followed by his answers. This is the springboard we will use to kick off Mr. Hunter’s live “virtual press conference” on FR today.

Please stop by and say hello and you may post additional questions. HOWEVER, Please realize that time limitations will prevent him from answering all the questions you may have. Though he may get time later to forward answers to many left unaddressed during this session.

Please drop Jim Robinson a note of thanks as well. For not only hosting this event, but for having the best conservative website in the country!

Also, no disruptors allowed. Your posts will be removed.

The following is our Kickoff Q&A session:

“Have you followed any of the stories of the Odyssey Marine Exploration’s treasure hunting vessel? John Edwards is an investor in the company.”

Interesting. I doubt if Edwards will be the nominee, because he keeps stepping in it, but you never know.

I don’t blame Teddy for that.

CATO does:

In 1908 came the National Conservation Commission and the Aldrich-Vreeland Act, the forerunner of the Federal Reserve and central banking, that authorized a National Monetary Commission. TR also pushed for graduated income and inheritance taxes and a “living wage.”

But wait! There's more!

Executive Power

In a 1912 campaign speech, TR trashed the idea of limited government, saying: “This is a bit of outworn academic doctrine. . . . It can be applied with profit, if anywhere at all, only in a primitive community such as the United States at the end of the 18th century.”

The Regulatory State

Roosevelt’s program of greater centralization of power in Washington and in the executive branch took off in 1903 with the creation of the Department of Commerce and Labor, which contained a Bureau of Corporations to investigate corporate behavior. “I have always believed that it would also be necessary to give the National Government complete power over the organization and capitalization of all business concerns engaged in inter-State commerce,” said TR.

A Model Conservative?

Theodore Roosevelt, whom some conservatives would make a patron saint, spread over the United States a federal regulatory blanket that has often smothered businesses and stifled entrepreneurship. TR’s broadening of executive power upset the constitutional checks and balances of our republic. His imperialism set a precedent for U.S. meddling abroad and entangling alliances—a policy unfortunately praised by today’s neoconservatives. Mark Twain, who knew Theodore Roosevelt, may have exaggerated when he described him as “clearly insane.” But there’s no doubt that TR was a poor friend of the Constitution, capitalism, and peace.

Some conservative. No wonder the corporate RINOs loved him (Federal regulation was effectively a Tar Baby, giving big corporations an advantage in the economies of scale in the business if dealing with bureaucratic compliance). TR was the Schwarzenegger RINO of his day. His legacy is largely socialist, and somehow didn't make it into public school history books (gosh, I wonder why). The FDA, USDA, an illegal government monopoly in the land entertainment and maintenance...

So with a record like that, is he really such a conservative hero?

Hunter: Just tune in to the floor debate or press conferences that I am engaged in and I think you will see lots of Conservative “fight.”

Laura Ingraham said that Duncan Hunter is like John Wayne.

As tough as Hunter is on borders, his kindness also comes through:

“John Hunter of San Diego organized the initial waster-supply efforts, WITH HELP FROM HIS CONSERVATIVE CONGRESSMAN BROTHER, Rep. DUNCAN HUNTER (emphasis mine) from the Imperial Valley, because he “had to do something” about people dying virtually in his own back yard.

Congressman Hunter has opposed illegal immigration for his entire 18 year tenure, and believes that great border patrol is the way to go. Nevertheless, he supports his brothers efforts to save lives.”

As far as I’m concerned, Myrle, we supporters at the grassroots level will have to do the work the mainstream media won’t do, that is give Duncan Hunter the coverage his candidacy deserves.

Blogger support is growing and Hunter’s campaign definitely has potential.

America desires strong leadership and with Duncan Hunter, we will once again have it. This I firmly believe.

I appreciate Duncan Hunter's willingness to address this forum. However, I am dismayed at his apparent support for the Employment Eligibility Verification System, which was a drastic, unnecessary, dangerous part of the just-defeated pro-illegal immigration Senate bill. If I read correctly, Congressman Hunter is endorsing the Bush Administration plan (which is currently in pilot) that would require all American workers to receive a REAL ID card (with an RFID chip?), and be government-authorized as "eligible" to work by the Department of Homeland Security before they can get a job.

Call me a liberty-lover, but I believe such government intrusion is not the correct response to our security problems. In fact, the remedy itself proposes great risk to security, by making personal information vulnerable to theft and prying eyes, and creating the potential to track persons and scan their cards from a distance.

I have to ask whether Congressman Hunter has thought this one through. The American people sure haven't, because most of them don't even know about it.

It’s an honor to have you here, Sir.

Neal Boortz ask the question today regarding the presidential candidates: Do we believe there’s a candidate running for the office of President who actually wants the job to serve our country and make America a better place? (not a quote) (He doesn’t seem to think there is one)

Mr. Boortz is looking for candidates to come on his show. I think you should give him a call.

Regards, Wolfcreek

I don't have anything negative to say about Mr hunter, although I will support Thompson if he runs, but to start out a forum subject with the words all offensive posts will be removed
to me that sounds a bit like controlled forum and I think all comments should be heard pro and con on any forum

I was very pleased to hear Hunter’s answers, and more pleased with the decorum and gentlemanly way he presented himself (rare in politics on the web). His answer on what programs he would cut, however, left me wanting. The “Bush Cut List” is not my measuring stick of fiscal responsibility. And the old whipping boy the National Endowment for the Arts was of course offered up for elimination, which is good, but kind of funny. Republicans hold the proverbial knife over the NEA more than preachers recount the story of Isaac in the Old Testament.

Nonetheless, thanks again to Hunter and his friends at FR for letting us have a civil discussion of issues we value.

Well, Mr. Walker, the removal of offensive posts has been a matter of Free Republic policy for a long time. It’s not that you can’t ask tough questions, and going through the past 10+ pages, you will find quite a few not-so-softballs. The issue here is simply being polite. The last thing we need to show a Congressman and Presidential candidate, who is here as our guest, disrespect with a “you suck” or “bababooey” or something along those lines. After all, we would like him to come back here and would like to see some of the other candidates do the same.

Sir, I think you’d make a superb President of the United States. As one who always strives for victory myself, I’ll still throw out here that IF you aren’t selected as the GOP’s candidate for President, then whoever that person may be would be a fool not to immediately tag you as their running mate.

The mainstream media would ‘hate’ you, of course, because you are so right on so many issues. Who cares. Even as VP, your stances would become well-known to many millions who have been unfamiliar with your work previously. The Conservative base of the party would be delighted, knowing that we are well-represented.

Either way.....as #1 or #2........you have earned our respect and the right to occupy either of those positions, and would do so honorably.

Heck, it is beyond a historic thread. What online forum ever had a guest Presidential candidate do a virtual press conference?

I think it opens a door to a new era to a new medium in politics!
