New Orleans (AP) -- The vice president of the City Council, once thought to be a likely candidate for mayor in 2010, pleaded guilty Monday to a federal bribery charge.
Oliver Thomas entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance, and prosecutors were to discuss details of the case later Monday. Bond for Thomas was set at $25,000.

Green Party? Independent? Socialist? Constitution Party? Republican?
Don’t tell me you have the audacity to think he’s Democrat. They’re like angels sent from heaven!

He violated teh most important rulle of NO Politics, he got caught.
Ray Nagin said last week that crime is part of The Big Easy’s “brand”...

Did you see him on TV? What a self-serving dolt.
“I am (tears, tears, tears) guilty (tears, tears, tears) of taking gifts (tears, tears, tears)
STOP THE PRESSES!!!!
He’s guilty of taking bribes. B-R-I-B-E-S!
Gifts my butt.
Enjoy the Federal pen, Boudreaux!
Oh- this native’s heart just bleeds- NOT!
He just made an announcement apologizing for his ‘mistake’. Yeah- bribery is a mistake everyone makes!
I’m sick of these pigs and their cronyism. The minute they get into office they put on the ‘anti corruption’ face while they get busy setting up relatives and friends getting contracts, kickbacks, etc. The relatives get jobs, get into politics, and the bank accounts fill up.
So what if there in an indictment here and there? Maybe a few years,a fine- and meanwhile all their cronies have profited big time!
This investigation should go all the way up to Morial. The question is- does the US Attorney have the guts to prosecute the head of the Urban League?
Stay tuned!
A mistake is when you dial a wrong number.
Gov. Edwards used to get lots of gifts. And he was lucky at the poker table.
I just hope they can get to Morial.
This is a house of cards and the middle card of the deck was just removed. I would assume Thomas will rollover on his buddy Eddie Sapir and once Sapir is in cuffs, Sapir will sell out the “Christ-like prescence” of Marc Morial in exchange for a lighter sentence.
Best EWW quote ever: The only way I can lose is if I’m caught in bed with either a dead girl or a live boy.
And it seemed like he might be right, for a long time, while the feds tried to nail him. But he’s in prison now. In a way, I feel sorry for him. He had a certain elan. And he could not have performed less competently than Blanco.
I hope he’s sweating.
And how will this hamper his ability to become NOLA’s Mayor next time around ? He’s just making his bones as a rodent.
Me too! Wipe that smug sneer right off Marc Morial’s face!
Don’t you love all the ‘good guy who made a bad mistake’ BS in the news here?
They are determined to give him credit as a ‘standup guy’ for ‘admitting’ he did wrong! EXCUSE ME— he admitted it AFTER he was caught.
All this ‘I’m sorry’ crapola doesn’t cut it, and whatever ‘good’ he did ain’t worth squat now. He’s a criminal, he took a BRIBE( odds are it wasn’t just the one, either). And his family? Well- when Daddy came home with $15 grand extra, I’m sure they enjoyed it.
No mercy! The rest of the politico’s here look like they’re nervous and sweating! Good- I want to see lots more heads rolling!
So the ghetto thugs come by it "honestly" then.
Every arrest in our city comes with the obligatory rush to the microphone for the aunt, grandma and even in some cases the mother, to say that (insert ghetto thug name here) is a good boy and is turning his life around.
Wish I had a nickel for every time I heard that.
Nagin’s saving grace is that he’s stupid and not corrupt.
This is truly the Twilight Zone!
Incredibly, the talk on the radio this morning is ‘how can we use Thomas experience to help the City’?!
He’s sooooo valuable, and he has to ‘make a living’! It’s absurd! The talk show host actually wondered if there would be a place for Thomas on—get this— The Metropolitan Crime Commission!!!
This is ‘But Land’.
Sure— he committed a crime....but...he’s a ‘good guy’!
Sure— he accepted bribes....but...we can find him a job somewhere to ‘help the city’.
Thomas is very close to sainthood here for ‘taking it like a man’ and admitting he ‘did wrong’. The media- and the City Council, etc, are so sympathetic it’s sickening.
The mentality that elected Edwin Edwards- and that STILL wants him excused and forgiven- is alive and well here!
I am reminded of a line from Star Wars re. LA politics.
“ Can you trust him?”
“ No, but he’s my friend.”
