The woman attempted to grab the baby but was fended off by the girl's mother
A mother bravely fought off a couple who reached into her pram and attempted to snatch her four-month-old baby daughter by punching one of the would-be abductors in the face.
The female attacker yelled 'get the baby, get the baby' as the pair tried to rip the girl from her pushchair.
But the couple fled empty-handed because the tot was strapped into the pram and were finally driven away by the 30-year-old mother.
The mum, who lives in Leigh, was pushing the pram across a pelican crossing near Hulme Road in Leigh, near Wigan, at 8pm when the couple struck.
The woman first attempted to grab the baby, but as the mother fended her off the man reached into the pram.
He than ran away after being unable to release the baby, at which point the woman again tried to steal the baby.
The ordeal finally ended when the woman ran off after the mother punched her in the face.
Neither the mother nor her child were hurt, but the mother was left traumatised.
Detective Sergeant Graham Rigby, of Wigan CID, said: "This was a deeply disturbing incident in which a couple tried to snatch a baby from a pram.
"Thankfully the mother had strapped her baby into the pram and had the wherewithal to fight off the would-be abductors.
"She put up a determined fight against the couple and managed to fend them off, but she was left understandably horrified by what happened.
"We now need to hear from anyone who either saw what happened, or who saw this couple before the incident.
"We need to catch these people before they put another mother through a similar ordeal."
Police released a description of the couple they are looking for in connection with the incident.
The man is white, about 5ft 7in, in his 40s with a muscular build and very short black hair.
He was wearing black trainers, black jeans and a black leather jacket which covered most of his face.
The woman was also white, around 5ft 6in and in her 40s.
She wore black trainers, dark green combat trousers and a black jacket. Both offenders were wearing black knitted gloves.
Detectives want to hear from anyone who saw a couple fitting their description arguing in Atherleigh Way, near to Sainsbury's supermarket shortly before the incident.
Anyone with information can contact Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
That was a great Cohen Brothers film.
It could be argued that it helped several careers get going big time. Cage, Hunter, Goodman, and a little for McDormand, though she was in Hill street a few times before Raising Arizona.
Yeah, Cage had previously done Peggy Sue and Ridgemont High, but Raising Arizona was another thing altogether.
IMO.
I had to wrestle suitcases etc., and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to control my lively 3 yr old. So I made a “harness” out of dark blue velveteen. It was basically a 8 x 8 inch square that I had quilted and embroidered. It had a strap that came out of each corner (same material) and attached in the back to a 2 inch ring to snap a “leash” onto. Onto this I sewed little silver bells so if she did get separated from me I could atleast hear her.
By the time I actually got to the “boarding lounge” I really expected to have rocks thrown at me! Women were the worst. Men that noticed at all seemed to find the little rig mildly amusing. Women hissed and spat at me like rabid cats. I don’t think the monitors would let me quote most of the things I was called. Needless to say my mothering skill were flamed by all those righteous matrons. I wonder how many of them now buy such things for their grandkids and great grandkids?
Personally I thought it was a really neat setup. I guess I was ahead of my time. Now no one bats an eyelash.
My amended score...

How ingenious!!!!!
You could probably make a fortune selling them now.
Give them time. Britain takes a dim view of personal self-defense, especially if it's effective.
The unmistakable sign of a person who is full of envy and hatred. Best ignored.
Just to break up the boredom, you could shout for help, while pointing at the busybody and screaming that he/she just threatened your baby. While shielding your baby and looking suitably horrified, you "dial the police" on your cel. Meanwhile, an angry crowd gathers around the "perpetrator," who is caught completely off-guard. You fade out to a local bistro and have yourself a good laugh over a microbrew.
If it was rabid, cats discovering the body might bring infectious matter back to you or your neighbors. Next time, you might consider dousing it with kerosene and lighting it up.
Guess those two losers are not real parents or they would know a mother would fight to her death before letting them take her baby. Awesome job the mother did.
We considered all of that, but lighting the burn pile right now is not something we are going to do because of how dry it has been. We left it to the carions.
Do you remember the situation outside Dover in about ‘85 or ‘86 that I mentioned earlier?
No argument from me on that.
No argument from me on that.
Bump to Supermoms.
The world has gone insane. All of it.

EXCELLENT news. Thanks for the update.
Good NEWS update on this one!!!!!
I cannot believe anyone - after spotting that mom - would attempt to take her baby — she looks like she would fight.
I am so glad they caught them. That evil pair deserve to be punished.
