Rough Start for Sheehan in Battle to Unseat Pelosi (Potentially Trails 66-30%)

Rough Start for Sheehan in Battle to Unseat Pelosi August 11, 2007 (Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan faces a difficult task if she runs against current House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi next year, according to a poll by SurveyUSA released by KPIX. 66 per cent of respondents in California’s 8th Congressional District say they will vote for Pelosi, no matter who the Republican candidate is.

Unconditional support for Sheehan stands at nine per cent, while 21 per cent of respondents would need to know who the GOP contender would be, before deciding their vote.

On Aug. 9, Sheehan—the mother of U.S. soldier Casey Sheehan, who died in April 2004 during the coalition effort in Iraq—officially announced her bid for the California congressional seat currently held by the House of Representatives speaker. Sheehan said she decided to seek public office after Pelosi failed to support articles of impeachment against U.S. president George W. Bush last month, adding, "The country is ripe for a change. It's going to start right here and right now."

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said the House speaker has opposed the "misguided" Iraq war from the start, adding, "As a mother and grandmother, (she) understands that there is no greater tragedy than losing a child."

Pelosi has represented California’s 8th District in the lower house since 1987. In the 2006 ballot, she defeated three contenders with 80.4 per cent of the vote. The next congressional election is scheduled for November 2008.

Polling Data

In an election for the U.S. House of Representatives, with Nancy Pelosi running as a Democrat, and Cindy Sheehan running as an independent, which describes you?

I would vote for Pelosi, no matter who the Republican is 66%

I would vote for Sheehan no matter who the Republican is 9%

I would need to know who the Republican is before I know how I would vote 21%

Not sure 4%

We really need to help her. The Dims left her high and dry, and revenge is as good a reason as not to run against Pelosi.

Not that she could get elected dog-catcher in podunk, anystate, but Cindy could be the gift that keeps on giving and sink Nancy.

Had she run in the Democrat primary, Cindy Shaheen might have had a shot, but as an Independent, she is nothing but a sideshow.

Its funny people don't know where she stands despite the fact that she's a national public figure. I'm just laughing my arse off here! DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM? Even John F*ckin' struggled for recognition despite being in the news as long as the day is long. Cindy Sheehan has her work cut out for her.

So they didn’t ask who folks would vote for in a Pelosi-Sheehan primary? What kind of jackleg poll is this?

Does Cindy have the residency requirement?

Does she have the sanity requirement?

Pelosi is a mother and grandmother? I don't think I have heard that before. Next, someone will tell me that John Kerry served in Vietnam!

Anything that has come out of San Francisco since after the ‘60s has been a sideshow.

“Does she have the sanity requirement?”

Both Nancy and Cindy are exempt.

I wouldn’t write her off. She might get some protest votes. If an R hasn’t got a chance and voters are upset with Miz Nancy, they might toss Cindy some votes.

Sheehan is only running because she can make some money doing it. People need to get real concerning this. Why else would Jackson, Sharpton or others run when they knew they couldn’t win? There’s a lot of money in running for office, even if you don’t win the election.
