August 12, 2007 -- NEWSWEEK magazine, which tells us in a recent edition about a "well-funded," global-warming "denial machine," is itself something of a trashing machine, a journalistic pretender that mistakes smear for substance. The stumbling, bumbling exercise in ad hominem McCarthyism takes it as an unchallengeable truth that global warming is a human-induced catastrophe that could be readily prevented, and concludes there is just one way to explain the "naysayers" to this holy writ: They are part of a "well-coordinated," heavily financed scheme cooked up by self-serving corporate interests to dupe the public and confuse or buy off politicians. The article not only fails to make so sweeping a case, but skips over a fact that the rawest newsroom rookie should have picked up - namely, that the Chicken Littles have outspent the cited think tanks and other groups in trying to inflict everyone with the willies, scientific exactitude be hanged. As some of the skeptics have noted in response to Newsweek's nastiness, the expenditures of the doubters are in fact dwarfed by the multimillions skillfully deployed by environmental groups. Sure, some corporations have sought to persuade lawmakers and the public that the alarmism is itself a danger, and why not? These businesses could be badly damaged by some suggested policies that, in terms of actually achieving anything, might be little more than voodoo dances. Newsweek thinks they would be jim-dandy. On the basis of what analysis? Nothing precise is offered.

My wife was forced to subscribe to it in college. We have not looked at it since, other than a frayed copy in my CPA's office.

I saw the Newsweek article. The assertion that “Global Warming deniers”, which is not even an accurate description because one would be a fool not to believe the world has warmed, are well funded by big oil and such is just another lie and a further attempt to side step the debate. The anthropomorphic warming camp are the cartoonists of science ascribing human malfeasance to the natural warming and cooling patterns of our planet.
The Earth has been much warmer and carbon dioxide levels have generally been far greater than the current 380ppm. The warming at the end of the last Ice Age (15,000 bp)in which temperatures rose by 15 degrees in a human lifetime did not correspond with a CO2 increase which the IPPC has stated that current levels are greater than they have been in 650,000 years. This contradicts the connection between global temperature (a misnomer) and CO2 levels.
I did notice a recent report in which the Global Warming Hystericists are hedging their bets by claiming that the real warming won’t occur till 2009. It is a report so clearly designed for political aims that I had to chuckle when I saw it. Do they think people are morons to be tricked? I think we know the answer to that question because they are saying that anytime they make the false assertion that Global Warming realists are funded by big oil something that is patently false. The vast majority of scientists (which number in the thousands) who do not ascribe or support the hysteria have never received money from or been in the employment of big oil. Many of the most outspoken were on the forefront of global warming when it was in its infancy.
I will tell you something and that is those with the greatest financial interests are the government scientists and bureaucrats who have benefited from the billions being spent worldwide to study and “combat” global warming. If they get their way global warming will be used to push aside everything else. Global warming is a socialists dream machine to grow bureaucracy and push for a new world tax. Already these Warming extremists are trying to get people fired who disagree with them and label anyone who dares suggest more reasoned interpretations as no better than holocaust deniers.
This is not new, they have succeeded in the past using this intimidation technique and it is only in the past few years that this machine has been opposed successfully which is what is enraging them now. Reasoned people must put the left in its place. We can not look to their hysteria as well meaning when it has the effect of starving poor people and leaving the innocents to be slaughtered by extremists. They should not be allowed to call themselves humanitarians when their actions allow hundreds of thousands to die in reeducation camps and millions to fall at the hands of communist aggression as they did in East Asia. They want to redefine the world based upon myths as they did with abortion and homosexuality. They will be opposed this time and they will fail.
I will not let my children fall victim to the left which wants to change the world into one governed by a polit bureau of fringe groups and deluded environmentalist misanthropes.
hasn't been much of a machine, but this week's release of corrected data that have been fundamental to the GW crowd ought to do something as it emulsifies the entire GW game plan.
Add in studies being done which show weather stations next to aircraft parking, air conditioner exhaust, even barbecue grills, and the data may be even more flawed than has been shown, with significant measurement error in many locations due to changes in infrastructure in the vicinity of the measuring equipment.
As a scientist, I will maintain that any warming which may have occurred is part of a normal and natural cycle, and not significantly the result of human activity.

I’ve heard that and it makes sense. Any temperature readings of ground temperature near cities should be considered skewed. What I find really troubling is how what is not so clear becomes certain in the minds of those who want so much to believe. Irrational Misanthropism is becoming more and more dangerous and costly.
I remember when after temperature measurements of the upper atmosphere did not reflect the warming that was predicted that the the data was “corrected” and new data sets were developed which (are we to be surprised?) showed the warming that was missing. I never did find out what they corrected but I am always suspicious when data is adjusted to fit a projection especially without detailing a clear rationale for changing the data outside of it simply “didn’t fit”.
I work with large volumes of data and we would not accept such an approach from a large corporation that found after further analysis that instead of showing a loss that instead a new adjusted data set shows profits right in line with what they had projected. When all roads lead to Rome even when they lead to Settle then it indicates there is something amiss. The Global Warming Hysteria is like that. It gets warm its global warming, it gets cool that is global warming. What it shows me is that the “experts” are grasping at straws and not just looking to find out what is really the case.
The "experts" who have signed on to this hysteria have severely compromised their professional reputations. That can be a career wrecker. It is no surprise that they will continue to fight as their ship sinks.
I too work with fairly large volumes of data, and by paying attention to the anomalies, I am able to discover resources others miss, others who have dogmatically clung to concepts in spite of the data.
I get a real kick of working in an established oil field and finding 'new' oil bearing strata others have missed--and I have done so with amazing regularity--because I let the data talk to me, instead of shouting it down with dogma.
Out there somewhere is a hungry Grad Student even now plotting to cash in on the demise of the theory of anthropogenic global warming, writing up a grant proposal.
McCarthy was right! (Soviet documents have shown this to be the case).
