They Like Mike (Iowa Straw Poll)
National Review Online ^ | August 12, 2007 | Byron York

--SNIP--

Fourth place went, a little surprisingly, to Tom Tancredo, who delivered perhaps the biggest applause line of the day as the candidates delivered their pitches, one after the other, to the Republicans gathered in the air-conditioned Hilton Coliseum. The unexpected thing was that Tancredo’s applause-getter wasn’t about immigration. Instead, Tancredo told the story of Danny Dietz, a Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan in circumstances Tancredo blamed on restrictive rules of engagement. “When I am president, I will never, ever, ever send anyone into harm’s way with a CYA memo drafted by a Pentagon lawyer,” Tancredo told the crowd. “The only rule of engagement I’m going to have in a Tancredo administration is this: We win, you lose!” That got a lot more applause than anyone’s talk about change and the future.

Whatever the appeal, in general Tancredo went over pretty well. He certainly didn’t owe much support to his tent, which featured a corny, a cappella quartet/comedy group singing “Happy Trails” and “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” There were two guys dressed like cowboys, one like a hayseed, and — make of this what you will — one in a pancho, a big red sombrero and a wide Frito Bandito mustache.

Tancredo initially said he had to be in the top four to stay in the race, and he made it.

The real winner of the day was Huckabee, who is in the position that everyone else but Romney was fighting for.

I initially liked Huckabee, but his record indicates he talks a good game and says the right things that conservatives want to hear but he doesn't live up to the rhetoric.

I agree with him! Common sense is so refreshing. I'd like the Democrats to explain on the campaign trail why we can't win. Its a pity we can't get a President like Tom Tancredo!

Tancredo came in fourth in Ames yesterday. Romney, Huckabee and Brownback beat him. What was really surprising to me was that Brownback did so well.

On Gun Control:
”I fully and completely support the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The failure of the ACLU to defend this right, and of federal courts to make the second amendment binding on the states, as they have made the first amendment and most others, testifies to their intellectual hypocrisy.”
-Tom Tancredo

And Ron Paul, how’d he do? Did he get his legions of supporters to turn out?

Apparently, Brownback spent a lot of money. Second only to Romney in spending, I think.

“As for everyone else, Ron Paul won 1,305 votes, a number that many people thought might be higher until it turned out that a lot of the very vocal Paul fans wandering around the ISU campus were from out of state.” Gee, what a surprise.

For the incredible story of Danny Dietz and the Navy SEALs who were killed, and the soldiers who attempted their rescue, I recommend Lone Survivor.

I would add that not only were lots of Ron Paul supporters from out of state, but also out of mind.

The results from this straw poll doesn't mean much if the top tier candidates don't show to campaign. All you get is the "Best of the Worst'. Of course these guys should do well. The better staffed, better cashed campaigns weren't there. It does reflect what Rasmussen and a number of other polls indicate......the bottom tier are still the bottom tier. The 'Dead Last Gang' is still dead last.

The smart ones, who didn't spend oodles of cash on a 'popularity' contest were, Rudy, Fred, Duncan to a degree.

The Paulettes were hoping for a better showing and are coming up with some sinister voting machine conspiracy that kept their man from doing better, but Iowans indicated what the rest of the country sees in Ron Paul....'a nut'.

You know, I’d have never expected that either.

I’m still pulling for Hunter but could easily flip to Tancredo.

That’s not very smart... At least Romney drew his supporters from in-state so they could vote. Shipping in a bunch of folks to an event who can’t even vote in the event is as backwards minded as can be - but seems just about right for a lot of the Paul supporters I’ve seen posting here.

I like Tancredo, even if the Bush administration is working hard to deep-six his campaign. Tancredo has been the most vocal opponent of Bush’s plan to help Mexico invade the country. Tancredo has also actually said that there are circumstance under which he’d leave Iraq soon. That won’t sit well for the large number of FReepers who want to have a Roman-style generations-long occupation of that hellhole.

Fox News didn’t even find it necessary to mention the mere existence of Tom Tancredo in their online straw poll article (as of 8:00 AM MST, Sunday August 12). Also lacking mention are Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul.

“Gee, what a surprise.”

No kidding. Every election cycle, some candidate chases the kooky college vote. It never materializes but they will do the same next cycle. The very definition of insane. Nothing against Paul but I don’t know how his “conservative” followers can stand to be in the same camp as the anti-war hippie college kids. You lie down with dogs...

Also, why can’t his followers see that most of this “vocal” support is just liberals chanting the same old chants?

I noticed the state department is now on board with attacking Tancredo. It’s pathetic.

stand by tancredo if you want a sovereign nation.

otherwise there is no use of even having elections any more.

“Apparently, Brownback spent a lot of money. Second only to Romney in spending, I think.”

Romney spent huge amount of money, around $5.7 million in Iowa and got 4,516 votes (out of a little over 14,000 total). That would translate into $1,262 per vote.

Now, just was the point of that statement?

Do the dems sit otherwise?
