BET's Disturbing "Read a Book" video
YouTube/BET ^

Posted on 08/12/2007 6:24:14 AM PDT by quesney

This video, which I've heard is running on BET, is a sad testament to what much of the black community has become. The message is supposed to be a positive one, but it's anything but. One of the most disturbing things I've seen recently.

You guys don't get it. The video WAS positive, in a way it MOCKED the rap lifestyle and encouraged blacks to read and take care of their kids and change their lifestyle.

It satired rap music videos. I didn't see anything negative about this at all.

You got to be kidding...Satire or mockery?
Do you really believe that such a video would result in kids picking up books, parents taking care of their “GD” children, drinking more water, buying land, brushing teeth...and other
“Whitey” values ???
I see this video as mockery rejecting the very things that would help black “yuts” because these are “Whitey things” and they are stupid values.

I think it is PORNO...sad porno at that.

But, someone else said the reason that only white people can be racists is because white people are the ones with power.

Whites look at corrupt white politicians and corporate executives and see a criminal class out to loot public or shareholder funds and live above the law.

Blacks look at corrupt white politicians and corporate executives and see whites.

(Much as many whites look at Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and see blacks.)

Blacks typically don't understand that the elites do not derive their power from the consent of the governed average white American. Thus the old 60's saw about "Give Up The Power, Whitey!" is nonsense - "Whitey" doesn't have it to give them. They would be better off yelling "Give up the Power, Goldman Sachs!" ;)

When my now 23 year old son was a teenager and still lived at home he password protected MTV on our television so nobody could watch it....lol! It’s still password protected all these years later and we like it that way.

FReepers have demonstrated over and over again that satire is beyond them. That's why you have to use huge < /sarcasm> and < /satire> tags on all posts...and half the time that still isn't enough.

Many people just come here to vent their outrage over the state of the culture - asking them to interpret satire for what it is is simply too much. ;)

Exactly.

I'm becoming disturbed by this trend on FR. People post without any thought or (shudder) research at all. Pure knee-jerk reaction, sprinkled with a few witty one-liners and pictures of cats.

I don’t see what the problem is. It’s all good advice.

Thanks for the post quesney. You've enabled us to better understand the meaning of the term "Soul" and also to better understand what emanates from that "Soul."

Very informative.

That was my reaction. Anyone to whom this video would appeal, is not going to watch it and say, "Well, golly! I think I'll write out a check for back child support, then I'll pick up my kid and take him to the park, then later on I'll go to the library and check out War and Peace!"

It's amazing how low we've sunk. The reminders to brush your teeth and wear deoderant, they remind me of a public service announcement I frequently hear on the radio telling people to wash their hands after using the restroom. People-- adults-- apparently need to be taught to practice basic hygiene now.

God help us all.

Its hilarious, and to me, it comes across as something of a parody with a serious message.

Its quite catchy I'm afraid "Read a muh'a fuh'a book!"...

I totally agree that the video mocked the worst of the Black Ghetto communities-not Blacks/African Americans. IT was extremely well done with music and drawings (I especially liked the part where there was a nice neighborhood and then a poof and everything was run down and dirty-that’s because I once lived in Detroit) and the video got the message across that certain people in the ghetto culture have mocked reading a book but look what
mocking learning -and women-and drugs, etc. have brought us.

Oh yeah, “Read a MFin’ book N!”

This is totally misunderstood.
It’s not a public service announcement.

Since they took away all the weight machines, TV sets and smoking time in jail, this song is just explaining how to do time in lockup.
Whats worse is that the targeted audience can’t read.

If this is true...then the Africans of this country are troubled.

Well I’ve met people who immigrated to the U.S. from Africa. They really seem to have their act together.

Oh, were you talking about U.S. citizens who can’t seem to pull their head out from their butt, take the necessary action to behave in an acceptable manner and make a decent life for themselves?

The klan could not have done a more effective job of promoting racial stereotypes of young black men.
