BET's Disturbing "Read a Book" video
YouTube/BET ^

Posted on 08/12/2007 6:24:14 AM PDT by quesney

This video, which I've heard is running on BET, is a sad testament to what much of the black community has become. The message is supposed to be a positive one, but it's anything but. One of the most disturbing things I've seen recently.

This is the essential message that gentlemen like Bill Cosby and Thomas Sowell have been pushing for the black community....and I don't wish to put words in his mouth but I think TrueBlackMan would share the sentiment.

But the way they're conveying the message is flat-out demeaning and racist.

Without knowing the context it's broadcast in, it's hard to tell if it's even serious or if it's mocking the message of blacks who are trying to reform the Thug Culture.

I will admit to being shocked and dumbfounded.

If BET is a highly supported, watched and influential member of the black community, then they are indeed lost.

I can see appealing in familiar ways to kids to get them to read more or whatever, but...THIS? I found it to be sad and disgusting.

These types of openly expressed thoughts usually precede a guerilla warfare type of situation, much like the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland.

I am not advocating that this occur, just predicting it.

“I believe this video is SUPPOSED to be a parody of the old Saturday morning public service announcements which used to run between cartoons. It’s not meant to actually be viewed as a positive message.”

I’ve seen it on BET a few times, as it aired. It’s a real PSA. It’s shown sometimes during commercials. No lead in, no joking, just the PSA.

There was no entry on Snopes.

But just Googling it as well tells me it’s real. And there were news items about it.

The answer is easy. It is all based on jealousy.

Unfortunately, it probably is a positive to some of BET's viewers.

I wonder what another 45 years of liberalism will accomplish in the black community.

“Same with MTV.”

MTV and VH1 have the most vile programming on TV. I have no doubt they would not be on the air if “ala carte” programming was the standard.

Bears repeating. It’s just that simple.

I’m not doubting what you saw, but how could it be on BET - wouldn’t they have to bleep out every other word? Or maybe they did?

Anyway, it was horrific, and does NOTHING to further the cause of black illiteracy. And I’m sure the authors know that, and put it out just for shock value.

Funny how the massage to shoot cops and abuse women using the same music and vocabulary isn’t racist...?!?!??

The message appears to be that you don’t have to “Act White” to “act white”?

Apparently, literacy, aspirations, basic hygiene and civility are rejected among certain people (e.g., Chris Matthews) as oppressive external impositions. (I, for one, always thought that Blacks tended, on average, to be well groomed, maybe this is something new.)

If I were Black, I would find this infuriatingly condescending, degrading and asinine. The message seems to be that Blacks are too infantile and chronically ithyphallic to function in a modern technological civilization.

“Or maybe they did?”

They did, just like they do with their videos, which sound like my speakers are going out because of cuts to silence every 2 seconds.

If “In Living Color” came on any other station...

“These types of openly expressed thoughts usually precede a guerilla warfare type of situation, much like the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland.”

Well, it’s been 40 years since Newark and Detroit’s riots... and most historians note that they weren’t “race riots” but “civil insurrections.”

Not advocating, just saying that human nature hasn’t changed.

I don’t recall Bill Cosby saying n**** or mother f***** or having cartoonish “asses” w/ the word book sprawled across it while “mock humping”.
