Paul Camp May Catch Romney’s Bus

Paul Camp May Catch Romney’s Bus

Ron Paul’s supporters are actively encouraging Iowa voters to take advantage of Mitt Romney’s offers of free transportation to the Iowa Straw Poll on Saturday and then, once they are there, to vote for Mr. Paul.
...

“Some say if Mitt is willing to bus Iowans to Ames for the straw poll, they should take him up on his offer!” says a flier in Iowa and on the Internet ...

The flier is topped with a banner that says “2008 Ron Paul News,” but Jesse Benton, a campaign spokesman, said it was the handiwork of independent supporters over whom the campaign had no control.
...

While Romney is pouring thousands of dollars into winning the Ames straw poll, it is not clear what role Paul might play in cutting into Mr. Romney’s lead or jumbling the outcome for the other candidates.

Red and white “Paul” signs have sprouted up in cities across Iowa, at street corners and in front lawns, signaling at least some level of interest.

“He’s kind of a wild-card candidate,” said Chuck Laudner ... of the state’s Republican Party. “We don’t know what to expect. ...”

... the Paul campaign appeared to be “bringing in a lot of folks from out of state” to help organize Iowans, who are the only ones allowed to vote. He said it was hard to read what the campaign was doing because it had made no contact with the state party. “They’ve moved outside the whole campaign community,” he said. “They don’t come by. They do their own thing.”

The Romney campaign is bracing for a larger-than-expected showing from Paul supporters, ...

The Paul campaign has bought the minimum of 800 tickets to give to Iowans to vote. Other campaigns have bought thousands.

Oh, my goodness, some bunch of dirty hippies is trying to take advantage of poor Mitt Romney! LOL.

My expectation is that no more than a hundred or so Ron Paul supporters will take advantage of Mitt. But this story has been flaming around the internet and finally surfaced at NYT's blogs so I thought it worth posting for a little pre-straw poll drama.

These excerpts are just the high point. More fun reading at NYT blogs.

I’ve wondered whether or not the campaigns had any gatekeeping function in place to keep other candidates’ supporters from taking them up on the free tickets. I guess there isn’t, or at least not much of one.

My expectation is that no more than a hundred or so Ron Paul supporters will take advantage of Mitt.

I think you are exactly right with that.. if Paul has any more than 100 supporters, chances are they don't believe in buses because the internal combustion engine is not in the Constitution.

LOL, Guerilla Campaign indeed, if Mitt had more Paul in him, then maybe, he just...well...

Romney is really trying to win that straw poll, I guess he calculates that in such a scattered field, that winning it will boost him over Thompson and MacBeth’s ghost err...McCain..

...he would have to have some serious time in the confessional (or whatever Mormon's version of that is), but Rudy would like him better...

Seesh, don’t they know this all says more about Ron Paul than Romney?

Well, no. I’ve had a few discussions with Paul supporters here on FR, they are seriously lacking in the mental horsepower category.

Feel free to ping the Mittlist as well if you guys want in on this.

This apparently started as a post on a Ron Paul blog site.
Ron Paul News » Should a Ron Paul Supporter take Mitt’s Free Expenses to Ames?
Then it seems it was discovered by Mittsters and they got incensed about it over at MyManMitt.com.

From there, it turned into a snit in the Blogosphere between the two camps.

Most of the RP supporters have urged the rest not to have anything to do with this.

My favorite post from the original blog page is this one:

My Man Mitt is Desperate Says:

It’s disgusting to think that Ron Paul Supporters would degrade the fine and noble practice of buying votes.

Those law firms, lobbyist and special interest groups paid good money to buy this election and it would be a disgrace if people took advantage of that benign charity.

We want our voters to act more like politicians:

Once their votes are bought they stay bought.

Lots of good zingers from both camps. As I said earlier, I don't think Mitt needs to worry much and this whole story is actually pretty funny. It's just an Iowa GOP fundraiser after all.

At My Man Mitt, they have fresh stuff up on hysterical Brownback supporters and the following tidbit from Eric Dondero, the legal-prostitution advocate who plans to run against Ron Paul in his home district (Dondero, well-known for bragging about how wonderful it was to frequent prostitutes when he was in the Navy and how we need to legalize it for our military). Note the reference to Mitt's '94 run when Republican Liberty Caucus supported him. The RLC is a stronghold of libertarian Republicans and their foremost candidate is always...Ron Paul.

Eric Dondero at Mainstream Libertarian has an interesting article about a Libertarian site encouraging people to vote for Romney.

In 1994, Senatorial candidate Mitt Romney was endorsed and heavily backed by the libertarian-leaning Republican Liberty Caucus in his race against Ted Kennedy. More recently Romney made a very libertarian statement to the AP on pornography:

"I am not pursuing an effort to try and stop adults from being able to acquire or see things I find objectionable; that's their right. But I do vehemently oppose practices or business procedures that will allow kids to be exposed to obscenity."

Now at least one Web Blog is urging Libertarians to consider supporting Romney. The site Independent Libertarian Spirit is appropriately Christian libertarian.

For certain Mitt has one thing libertarian Ron Paul does not have: A chance.

I think this story is just too funny on too many levels.

Cut that out..

And besides, its the combustion itself that’s not Constitutional. It infringes the rights of the gas and oxygen molecules...

Paul will be lucky if he can repeat what PAUL did in '88.
