Fight Global Warming by Taxing 'McMansions,' Dingell Says By Randy Hall CNSNews.com Staff Writer/Editor August 10, 2007

(CNSNews.com) - The chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee this week announced a plan to fight global warming by reducing carbon emissions up to 80 percent by the year 2050. This would be done by raising gasoline taxes 50 cents per gallon and ending mortgage tax deductions on large houses, which the Michigan Democrat called "McMansions."

During town hall meetings in Ann Arbor and in Dearborn, Rep. John Dingell said he will make these proposals as part of a multi-tiered bill he will introduce on Sept. 1 in his committee, which handles legislation dealing with global warming.

Some home-contracting firms, however, criticized Dingell's proposal as misguided and economically detrimental. And some conservative tax experts agreed, noting that Americans already pay too much in taxes and raising taxes more will only curtail consumption and investment.

Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.)Dingell said his measure will call for an economy-wide tax of about $100 per ton of carbon dioxide emissions; a cap-and-trade system that limits emissions but allows companies that pollute beyond their limits to buy credits from industries that produce less than their allotment; and provide extra funding for research on renewable energy.

But the congressman's most controversial recommendation was to take away the mortgage interest deduction for "McMansions," which he defined as homes larger than 3,000 square feet and which use more energy than smaller houses.

2000 sf here. If we had a tax on bad ideas, Congress would wipe out the deficit.

“makes one wonder...”

Wonder what? Wonder how someone like Dingell winds up in Congress? Wonder if he understands the implications of what he is saying regarding effects on the economy? Wonder how big his house is? Wonder why they don’t just get it over with and start debating the relative merits of socialism and communism on the house floor? Wonder what planet Dingell is from?

Congress should be a stint and not a career.

This anthropogenic global warming scam is all about raising taxes, growing government and separating the citizens from their God given freedom.

"Congressional Dynasty" should also be an oxymoron.

raising gasoline taxes 50 cents per gallon

If Exxon's profit of 11c per gallon is "obscene" and "windfall" and such, then what the heck is this 50c tax, on top of the 40+c they have already?

Well ....

The home mortgage interest deduction should go. So should the non-taxable status of employer contributions to health and pension plans and all the rest of the big sacred cow loopholes. The best way to do this is comprehensive tax reform in which the loopholes are axed in return for a lowering of the rates. But I'm not sure that I object to a retail approach, especially if dems want to take the heat.

The home mortgage interest deduction is a classic regressive subsidy. It is also largely capitalized into the purchase price, which means it drives housing cost inflation. Harry Homeowner pays a higher price up front and recoups when he sells. The real subsidy goes to realtors and mortgage lenders, the middlemen who work off a percentage. Anything that inflates housing costs boosts their bottom line.

Tovarisch, everyone should be cramped into Soviet Union style apartment blocks. Except for of course the special Party people.

And next will be waiting in line at the grocery store for nothing, since food should be produced no more than 20 kilometers from where it is consumed.

This is where the extreme greens want to take us. Yet another attempt at creating Socialist Workers Paradise. It’s only killed 100 million people so far, so what’s a few more?

The home mortgage interest deduction should go.

Maybe, but dang if if it should happen for environmental reasons.

If the DingellBerries tax us, and global worming lessens (which it will), then it just encourages the "I told you so" aspect, and they think the tax actually helped.

Let's not encourage them.
