Ancient Uyghur Fortress on a Tuvan Lake to Turn into a Recreation and Tourist Centre

An ancient Uigur Fortress (Por-Bazhyn) on a Tere-Khol lake in the eastern part of Tuva (near Kungurtuk village) can become a 'Russian Shaolin' as Sergei Shoigu, native Tuvan and currently Russian minister for Extraordinary Situations (second in popularity after President Putin Russian) put it in today's Rossiiskaya Gazeta daily.

A research expedition to the ruined fortress of Por-Bazhyn will take place this summer with an archeological team numbering over 200 people. 'We shall build there a Russian Shaolin and invite everybody to come there. And our youth will come I am sure. They will learn philosophy, Tibetan medicine, horseracing, and oriental martial arts in there,' Shoigu says. In Tuva itself an attitude to these great plans is not unanimously positive. Tuvan scientists are afraid of the improper restoration works substituted by new construction. Ordinary people think that the fortress become a visit place of only rich people as not any would be able to afford a air flight to the place.

The Ministry head learned about this unique fortress, cut from the rest of Tuva by Tere-Kol lake, in his school years when working in archeological expeditions headed by Peterbourgs's scientists around Tuva.

The Uigur town on a Tere-Khol island dates back to approximately the 8th century. It was ruined by fire. Little is known about its inhabitants. There were found rests of the only warrior who had been an extremely tall man with Europeid features.

Nowadays the ruins of the Por-Bazhyn fortress, which is located on a Lake Tereh-Khol island in Tuva near Russian-Mongolian border, look like a rectangular labyrinth of structures similar to a Buddhist or Hindu mandala.

The scientists suggest that the fortress might be a palace or a temple complex, which could be destroyed in a war action over one thousand years ago.

The Uighers’ written language was adopted for use by the Mongols by Chinnghis Quan. They also furnished some of the Quan’s first bureaucrats when the Mongols overran them in the late 12th or early 13th century.

A few facts:

Tuvans are considered ancient ancestors of our North American natives.

Shoigu is Tuvan.

Shoigu runs a fleet of the world's most powerful, proven, firefighting aircraft.

The US Forest Service says you cannot have these.

If anything, Tuvans are closely related to Mongols and the Huns. Your post seems to suggest that the Tuvans, Mongols, and Native Americans are all genetically related. Any source for this fascinating “fact”?

I read somewhere that the genetics of the original ice bridge crossers match.

On The Presence Of Non-Chinese At Anyang

"The first group to arrive are held to have come from the north because the cranial measurements of the surviving skulls of this type are affinial with the skulls of the Afanasevo culture in particular, which was located in the Sayan-Altai/North Mongolia area, and with the skull types of steppe people living much further to the west. This group is called "Proto-European" by Mair and Mallory, and it can be dated to have arrived in Xinjiang about 1800 B.C.E. or somewhat earlier."

Both? I thought Mongols looked like present day Mongolians and Huns looked like present day Hungarians. Mongolians and Hungarians don’t look like they are genetically related to me. Are they?

Putin and Monaco prince arrive in Tuva to look at ancient fortress

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Albert II of Monaco arriving at Kyzyl airport. Photo courtesy of Vesti news-channel.Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prince Albert II of Monaco have arrived at the Tuva republic. Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu and head of the Tuva government Sholban Kara-ool were meeting them at Kyzyl airport. From the airport Putin and Albert II flew by helicopter to the Por-Bazhyn fortress.

In the view of scientists, the ancient Uygur fortress Por-Bazhyn was build in the middle of the eighteenth century during the rule of Khagan (King) Moyun-Chur. Its name means “clay house.” The fortress was located on an island of Lake Tere-Hol 250 kilometres southeast of Kyzyl. The monument was discovered by the renowned Russian Orientalist, Dmitry Klements, in 1891.

Under the Russian president’s decree, in 1995 the Por-Bazhyn fortress was included in the list of objects of historical and cultural heritage of federal importance.

The Russian Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Union of Cinematographers, All-Russian Voluntary Society Sports Russia and a number of other non-governmental organisations acted as founders of the Cultural Foundation Fortress Por-Bazhyn.

Aside from Shoigu, the trusteeship board members are Chairman of the State Duma lower house of parliament Boris Gryzlov, Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Nikolai Patrushev, Minister of Natural Resources Yuri Trutnev, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev, Minister of Culture and Mass Communications Alexander Sokolov, Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, St. Petersburg governor Valentina Matviyenko, President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiyev and other prominent state figures and politicians.
