Hunter tops Thompson - misses NFRA endorsement by 2%
Campaigns & Elections Magazine ^ | August 7, 2007 | Roy Tyler, National Communications Director

Posted on 08/08/2007 5:09:01 PM PDT by Calpernia

(Ames, Iowa)... The National Federation of Republican Assemblies, who calls themselves the "Republican Wing of the Republican Party," held a straw poll at its convention in St. Louis last weekend and California Congressman Duncan Hunter exceeded all expectations. Hunter missed receiving the official endorsement of the Assemblies by a couple of percentage points. After seven rounds of voting by the endorsement committee of the organization, Hunter received 64.8 percent of the balloting, less than two percent of the two thirds vote needed. After seven ballots Fred Thompson was the only other candidate considered. Hundreds of conservatives attended the event that attracted six GOP presidential candidates.

After the general Assemblies vote, convention delegates were charged with making a formal endorsement of one candidate. Their rules required that the delegates cast their votes while in session for candidates that they wish to endorse. Only candidates receiving more than 15% of the delegate's votes in the first round of voting in the second session were considered for endorsement. After that vote, only Hunter and Fred Thompson received more than 15% of the delegate's votes. After the seventh and final round of voting Hunter had 64.8 percent support, less than two percentage points short of the needed vote. Thompson had 35.2 percent. The assemblies made no endorsement.

Tom DeLay was the keynote speaker of the convention telling fellow conservatives that unless Republicans "get their act together" in a hurry, Senator Hillary Clinton will become the next President of the United States.

I like the sounds of these guys. But, they'd better fork it over to Hunter.

They were left with two choices there, a moderate and a conservative. I hope this means DeLay is supporting Duncan Hunter in a real hurry.

I don't know that much about the man, but he sure has that right.

Don't delay says Tom DeLay.

“Hunter is the first candidate I’ve ever really felt good about. I suspect that people felt the same way about Reagan in his day.”

You can bet I did!! After voting for Carter in ‘76, I couldn’t wait to vote for Ronald Reagan. We stood in a long line at the precinct waiting to vote not long before the polls closed here. You could sense a big victory taking place. I was one of those “Reagan Democrats” and now I am solidly a Reagan Republican.

I am as excited about Duncan Hunter as I was with Ronald Reagan!

I wish I could fit your post in as my tagline.

“our best chance is to nominate a true conservative. Republicans want a candidate they can feel good about.”

and Americans need Duncan Hunter’s solutions.

“The DEMOCRAT-controlled Congress is in the toilet with their ratings, so I think it will be easier to beat their candidate than some think.”

But only if we choose a conservative that motivates hardworking taxpaying families want to go to the polls.

Go Duncan Hunter!

At the time I was old enough to vote for Reagan but at 18 I wasn’t very interested in politics.

Hunter insists we need to rebuild the manufacturing base to bring back manufacturing jobs.

It is a matter of national security.

That resonates even with blue-collar dems.

Duncan Hunter is a veteran with solid conservative credentials and a consistent voting record.

His message speaks not only to the base, but also blue collar workers (dem & rep) who are losing their jobs and are crushed by taxes.

DUNCAN HUNTER is the best person to beat the llibs, untie the base, and get Reagan democrats on board.

NO other person has his credentials. Why should he be someone else’s conservative, experienced prop?

I like Mr. Hunter very much and as of this time I will vote for him. However, he needs the $$$$$$ that people like McCain saw fit to sew up for themselves to protect their political wills. I pray that Mr. Hunter is the Republican candidate, but having lived through that Clintons reign I must face that very real possibility.

Oh, yes, he actually requested money for military equipment and tank protection from IEDs! To the libs, that’s big spending.

The military is constitutional-unlike the Campaign Finance Reform your guy Fred pushed for to silence the conservative base.

I agree! We need Hunter!

Not Thompson or anyone else is going to pick Hunter for their vp. We need Hunter at the top of the ticket and as far as running mates, well, that’s up to him.

That sounds like a victory for a good man. I am a little confused by the article though. It said no one who got more than 15% in a given round advanced to the next, but at the bottom listed a poll that showed Hunter with only 10%.

What does that poll represent?

Easy solution.

Get out and work for him.

Talk to your friends about him, and get them to go to his website.

It’s his message and his credibility that are resonating with people.

“DUNCAN HUNTER is the best person to beat the llibs, untie the base, and get Reagan democrats on board.”

LOL!! I am sure it was a typo, but “untie the base” seems appropriate because if we nominate an inferior candidate, the base will be “fit to be tied”!

He might even get out of sharing 2% with the others at the back of the pack.

“Ah President Hunter, has a nice ring to it... I like it..”

I like it, too, and so does Mark Levin, who is a stronger conservative than Limbaugh, imo.

Tonight Mark Levin said: “I REALLY like Duncan Hunter.”
