Mitt Does JFK

"My religion is for me and how I live my life," he declared. "I don't impose all my faiths and beliefs on you." For example, he noted that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't approve of booze and that he doesn't drink. But he won't be pushing for a new constitutional amendment banning alcohol......

(US News) For more than a year, there has been talk inside Mitt Romney's presidential campaign (mittromney.com) that the GOP candidate would give a JFK-ish speech explaining his religion--he's a Mormon--and how it would or wouldn't affect his presidency.

Well, it wasn't what they had in mind, but an unscripted, passionate, and argumentative Romney let loose last week during some off-air discussions with Iowa's WHO Radio host Jan Mickelson. It was caught by the radio studio's cameras. It's must-watching and hearing for anybody interested in the issue, as Romney, like JFK before him, brushed aside any concerns that he would let his religion rule his administration.

"My religion is for me and how I live my life," he declared. "I don't impose all my faiths and beliefs on you." For example, he noted that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't approve of booze and that he doesn't drink. But he won't be pushing for a new constitutional amendment banning alcohol.

His staffers thought it was so good that they posted it on a YouTube page (youtube.com/watch?v=-G9hydflwEQ). Campaign spokesman Kevin Madden tells me that "it shows Governor Romney at his best: tough, passionate, confident in his convictions and engaging. It could be titled MittTV Unplugged." Madden adds that the reaction has been good so far.

"Once we reviewed the interview in full, we thought that it showed Governor Romney in an unvarnished setting that folks would be interested in seeing. Judging from the reaction, supporters and potential supporters are really responding in a positive manner."

>>>Okay so he’s established that he’s willing to disobey his religious beliefs in the interest of political expediency. This makes me want to trust him to run the country WHY?<<<

Did you read a word of what he just said? He said his religion was for him. Not for running a country. Our country is run off of the constitution, shared values, and the ideal of freedom. Faith takes a centerpiece, but not just one faith.

I don’t believe you believe what you just wrote, anyway. Are you going to ban baptism of infants if you’re a Baptist? Are you going declare that there is but one true church if you’re a Catholic? How about banning the sale of meats on Fridays in Lent?

Come on. Don’t pull this. You can do better.

From 2010

I’m most impressed at how President Romney got the entire Middle East to go Mormon. No more suicide bombing for Abdul and Ahmed, now they are just polite guys on bikes out there peacefully proselytizing.

PING to the funniest post of the week!

And, as far as a bit of phoniness and self-aggrandizement ... well, that comes with the job description "politician"

My gosh...girl!!

You actually admit your guy is a phony, at times?

Is this why some of you hooked/lined/sinker folks for Romney say..."It's one thing to say something in a political moral sense...but another to be religious moral?"

I'm stunned....& my beeber isn't working.

Laugh all you want, taunt all you want, believe all the gossip and distortions you want..

I know that Joseph Smith was called of God and is a prophet of my Lord Jesus Christ who helped to restore The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the earth again!

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen

I am admitting nothing of the sort, Orange. Phony, how? I believe he truly is bright, well-educated and articulate. I believe he truly is attractive, charming and witty. I believe he truly cares about his family, faith and country. I believe he truly is well-mannered, old-fashioned and a litle bit of a square. I believe he truly does what he promises to do. So no, I don't think he's phony at all. He might not be what we are used to. But it's him.

Mostly, I am making fun of the "holier than thous" who think their chosen pol is "oh so sincere" 100% of the time, or is the "salt of the earth" or a good ol' "down to earth" guy. All politicians want us to believe they feel our pain or know exactly what we need better than we do. It's their job to sell us on that.

Politics is partially a show. One needs an ability to communicate with large groups of people, to navigate the dangerous waters of power, and an ability to perform and persuade. Nobody can be completely sincere all the time no matter who they are. One person cannot be all things to all people. People cannot be that naive, are they?

As far as Romney goes, I've seen him speak in a small setting a few times now and he seemed extremely sincere, honest and trustworthy to me. He appears to be an old-fashioned gentleman with good manners and proper upbringing. People are not used to that. They assume it is too good to be true and suspect its sincerity. Sometimes it's just true though. In his case, I am convinced that it is the real thing.

Mark Twain: American humorist.

All men have heard of the Mormon Bible, but few except the “elect” have seen it, or, at least, taken the trouble to read it. I brought away a copy from Salt Lake. The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair, and yet so “slow,” so sleepy; such an insipid mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print. If Joseph Smith composed this book, the act was a miracle—keeping awake while he did it was, at any rate. If he, according to tradition, merely translated it from certain ancient and mysteriously-engraved plates of copper, which he declares he found under a stone, in an out-of-the-way locality, the work of translating was equally a miracle, for the same reason.

The book seems to be merely a prosy detail of imaginary history, with the Old Testament for a model; followed by a tedious plagiarism of the New Testament. The author labored to give his words and phrases the quaint, old-fashioned sound and structure of our King James’s translation of the Scriptures; and the result is a mongrel—half modern glibness, and half ancient simplicity and gravity. The latter is awkward and constrained; the former natural, but grotesque by the contrast. Whenever he found his speech growing too modern—which was about every sentence or two—he ladled in a few such Scriptural phrases as “exceeding sore,” “and it came to pass,” etc., and made things satisfactory again. “And it came to pass” was his pet. If he had left that out, his Bible would have been only a pamphlet.
