Thompson Taps Former Campaign Manager (third)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fred Thompson on Wednesday tapped the man he credits with saving his 1994 Senate campaign to take over his likely presidential bid.

Bill Lacy, a former strategist for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and Republican National Committee, will run day-to-day operations of Thompson's committee to "test the waters" for a presidential run.

"He turned around my campaign for Senate in 1994 and, as I move toward a decision on whether to run for president, I am confident he will take our operations to the next level," Thompson, the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor, said in a statement.

"I'm here for the long haul," Lacy said in an interview from the committee's headquarters in a Virginia suburb. He said he has taken a leave of absence from his current post as the director of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

Thompson is expected to officially enter the race Labor Day week, and is showing strongly in national polls and surveys in several early primary states. But a certain measure of turmoil has hit his preliminary campaign this summer.

Yeah, and if he doesn’t get in the race now because he is busy helping NBC run their re-runs (for which I can only suppose he also gets money and plenty of it)

So do a lot of people, who would like to be paid for the work they did, and wouldn't be if the episodes were pulled.

but it seems he has interests which come before his participation in the coming election. Duncan Hunter does not have that problem

Doesn'r Duncan have a job where he's getting paid to represent someone or other?

You confuse whining with quips. If you wanna see the former, find a mirror.

Thanks for the snide parenthetical in your title.

I questions it’s accuracy.

Can you name all three “campaign managers”, and provide links to an official source where these three are actually named with that job title?

Snide? I’m not anti-Fred, dear.

This is the Drudge title. You can find it here in the second column.

He doesn’t let his job interfere with his campaigning.

He’s missed nearly 30% of the votes for this session.

“Go Fred go!”

More like “Go away”

It won’t be long before ol’ Fred is hawking Viagra and telling us how he has a “growing problem”, not a “going problem”.

I know, but ain’t it pathetic that he, who had some time in as a Senator and left government to go back to show business and now thinks he might like to be president, can get anywhere in this election. What kind of a place are we running here when he can get so far ahead of DUncan Hunter? I wasn’t always a Hunter supporter, but I am now. I just can’t seem to muster up any faith in Thompson; I don’t think he is serious.

“Thompson is expected to officially enter the race Labor Day week,”

Why so early? Why doesn’t he wait until Arbor Day, 2008?

All I can say is its gonna be a fun primary season. And after the fisticuffs and dust settle, hopefully we’ll have a guy we all support.

He became director of the Dole Institute in 1994.

I am not sure if that is the Dole of pineapple fame or the one who was Gerald Ford's running mate, either way, I am not sure one with that resume will get Thompson in the White House.
