Home-grown JF-17 aircraft better than existing F-16: Tanvir

KARACHI, Aug 7 (APP): Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed has said that JF-17 aircraft being manufactured in collaboration with China will be a sound fighter aircraft which in some respects is better than the existing F-16.

Talking to media at a book launching ceremony of ‘PAF Over The Years’, he said about 60 to 70 per cent manufacturing of the aircraft is being undertaken in Pakistan.

The engine is presently coming from Russia but later it will be developed by China, he informed.

Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed said talks are underway with China in connection with the acquisition of AWACS and a high-tech aircraft FC-20. “This mix will reduce our dependence on any single country’s assistance,” he noted.

He said the F-16 aircraft acquired recently as well as the modern weapons would further add to the technological advancement of the Pakistan Air Force.

He said a contract has been signed with USA for acquiring 18 new F-16 aircraft besides weapons and systems of electronic warfare and reconnaissance. This acquisition will be subject to the annual certification by the USA, he added.

Air Chief Marshal Tanvir M. Ahmed said four used F-16 have been received while 10 more such aircraft will arrive during the next year.

It’s already flown. This project first started as Sino-US programme in the 80s for an upgrade to Chinese F-7s.The Pakis have just spent a few million dollars for it.

Every where I see Islamic States being supported with military upgrades and supplies, I seem to see Russian and Chinese weapons.

So we are going to counter this by giving weaponry to the Saudi’s?

I think our leaders are incredibly stupid. The Jihad rides a red horse, no need to give them a sports car too.

I wonder how long until some twit makes a comment about “Raptor food.”

I don’t doubt that the JF-17 Thunder has a leg up on the early model F-16s in some areas, but to my knowledge, the JF-17 doesn’t have refueling capability and something of a limited payload. It was my understanding that the F-16s would remain the preeminent fighter of the PAF and the JF-17 would replace the lighter aircraft in the PAF fleet (i.e. Mirages and J-7s).

Well, those 2 drawbacks you mentioned can be corrected gradually as the PAF wants aerial refueling capability & as the Chicoms or Russians develop better engines. It sure can’t replace the F-16,but it sure is a good aircraft for the mentioned roles. The PAF will acquire the Chinese J-10 which will complement & gradually replace the F-16.

The J-10 that was not long ago also touted as being as good as or better than the F-16.

Seems everything new is better than the F-16, so long as you mean early blocs but don’t mention that’s what you mean.

Yup, the region is one of the prime areas for arms sales.

A lot of people take umbrage at the Russians and the Chicoms (and the French and Germans to a lesser extent) willingness to sell to states such as Syria, Venezuela, Libya, and the like, but the fact is that defense companies have to make money just like any other company. It’s only natural that countries want the best their money can buy, but often it comes with political constraints. Since these states can’t buy U.S. weapons, someone else is going to fill the void. And in some cases (definitely the minority), U.S. arms are inferior.

I actually think the J-10 might be able to hold its own against maybe the Block 50 version, but probably not the ones the UAE got recently.

The Chicoms got some U.S. help in the 80s and I’m somewhat confident that the Izzies and maybe the Frogs have been willing to give them some help, so I don’t think (contrary to what many here seem to believe) that the design is totally hapless. It ain’t gonna be able to take on a F-15 in a straight fight, but then again, that’s not really its intended purpose.

When I saw the picture, the first aircraft I thought of was the F-4.

F-4, F-20, and the twin tailed version that the Iranians have. Looks like the same mold was used.

Yeah it will take off, but upon landing you can expect a fire ball.
