SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Barry Bonds became the most prolific home-run hitter in Major League Baseball history Tuesday night, slugging his 756th in front of more than 43,052 hometown fans to pass Henry Aaron. Bonds' record-setting homer came in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 5-4 lead over the Washington Nationals. Bonds hit a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik deep to center field. The game was delayed by a standing ovation for Bonds, whose late father Bobby was a Giants player, coach and front-office employee.... Bonds also holds the season record for home runs with 73 in 2001.

The 43-year-old Bonds, who has spent 21 years in the majors, had tied Aaron at 755 on Saturday in the Giants' 3-2 loss in San Diego. Aaron's record had stood since 1976, when he retired after 22 years in the majors.

He has the highest on-base % in MLB this year (.479)

Make that .495 -- an incredible number at any age. If he rests his body DHing in the AL he could keep going for a while.

Steroids fight fatigue and boost muscle mass - amphetamines, contrary to certain assertions in this thread offer quite a few perfomance enhancing effects. If they’re useful for fighter pilots, they sure as heck have practical benefits for ballplayers, golden era hall of famers included. From wikipedia:

Short-term physiological effects vary greatly, depending on dosage used and the method in which the drug is taken. At therapeutic levels these effects could include ... increased stamina and physical energy,

Short-term psychological effects of the drug at therapeutic levels could include alertness, euphoria, increased concentration .. increased confidence...

Something I found on the Giants website just now:

“Bonds said he told the president, who has been under fire because of the five-year-old war in Iraq, that he has many friends who are soldiers and is strongly behind the troops.”

http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070808&content_id=2138216&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

I’m happy to hear that. And, I’m going to contribute to Barry Zito’s Strikeouts for Troops organization again. Anyone see him on Hannity & Colmes last fall? It was pretty cool. Zito not only raises the money for them, but spends good bit of personal time visiting wounded soldiers in the hospital.

You're either being deliberately obtuse or you're just a moron.

Your opening sentence applies perfectly to the rest of your rambling post. Your anecdote about how you worked out and got bigger is very nice, but everybody knows that's what happens when you work out—you don't need to convince people of that simple fact.

But if you honestly believe that Barry Bonds didn't use steroids, you're either being deliberately obtuse or you're just a moron. And if you do believe that Barry used steroids (as many of his defenders do), then why are you slamming all the other folks that agree with you?

As an aside, my calling BS on the previous poster wasn't a statement that his claim was impossible; merely that it was strangely convenient for his hysterical defense of the Roid King.

Seriously, I dont understand you Bonds groupies. Lots of people try to cheat but none as blatantly and for as long and to such effect as this miscreant. But I guess this is your own special way of "flippin it to the man"! You go, girl!

LOL. The Bonds supporters are an unusually annoying bunch. They don't care about honor, they don't care if athletes have to start taking steroids in order to keep up, they don't care if Bonds is the Roid King because he's their Roid King, after all.

And now, with one big swoop, Big Head has destroyed the preeminence of ALL those statistics by claiming the biggest one for himself, through dishonesty and cheating

Well said!

Your post is another perfect example of the Bonds Groupie that will go on and on about how you can’t “prove” that Bonds did it, but you never say that you don’t believe he did it. Because if you were to say that, even the Bonds defenders would think you were a fool. EVERYONE believes Bonds knowingly used steroids...lots of ‘em.

Loved the Bonds/Bush analogy.

A much better analogy is the Bonds/Clinton analogy.

CLINTON DEFENDER: It's just sex!!!
BONDS DEFENDER: It's just steroids!!!

CLINTON DEFENDER: Everybody does it!
BONDS DEFENDER: Everybody does it!

CLINTON DEFENDER: All that money spent investigating him, and you couldn't get a single charge to stick!!!
BONDS DEFENDER: You can't proooooove that he did it!!!

BONDS DEFENDER: You just hate him because he's black!
CLINTON DEFENDER: You just hate him because he's black!

Wow. Someone else who can use reason and think on a thread like this. Amazing. Thanks for the post.

And coincidence of coincidences, all of these people who can "use reason and think" just happen to be big Giants fans!!! They must put genius pills in that San Francisco water!!!

“Then you explain why my shoe size increased by one and a half sizes, and why my hat size increased by one size. I didn’t take any growth hormones, but experienced these changes.”

You best go to an Orthopedic specialist and ask him that as weight training does not cause that....Could it be you were “accidentally” taking human growth hormones and/or steroids without knowing it? (ha-ha)

And you are typical of Bonds Derangement Syndrome. Of course I don’t say either that enhancement use can be proved or that I believe it’s true. Unlike those with BDS I don’t KNOW the truth. As for EVERYONE knowing, seems hard to believe since the only facts out there are leaked from a Grand Jury and not verifable. I have never claimed to know the “truth”. What I do say is that this hatred being spewed towards Bonds as being Public Enemy Number One who has single handedly sullied America’s Sport is ridiculous. Much the same as everything going wrong in America is Bush’s fault. If your life is enhanced by this hatred of Bonds, then bask in it. Why is it necessary to convince us fools that you’re right?

Amen sister! This is one of those "agree to disagree" topics. Those who hate Bonds will never be convinced otherwise. Those who love Bonds will never be convinced otherwise.

Ah well - Happy Thursday!

I missed 757. I dropped my daughter off @ worship team practice, sat down at my desk to do "one little thing" and came up for air an hour and a half later.

I like Thursdays - 'cuz tomorrow is FRIDAY! Have a great day. We should probably freepmail rather than hang up a thread! LOL

Your opening sentence applies perfectly to the rest of your rambling post. Your anecdote about how you worked out and got bigger is very nice, but everybody knows that's what happens when you work out—you don't need to convince people of that simple fact.

Well, you and many others seem to deny that "simple fact" - Hence the opening sentence of my "rambling post". Most of you are either deliberately obtuse because you just hate the man or you're morons who know little or nothing about either steroids or bodybuilding.

When I see people claim that he "had to have done steroids" and their only evidence is a picture when he was eighteeen or twenty compared to a picture of him today, or some story they've heard about his head or his feet changing size, It seems that they're ignoring the "simple fact" - That means they're morons or they don't want to admit he could have gotten big through hard work.

But if you honestly believe that Barry Bonds didn't use steroids, you're either being deliberately obtuse or you're just a moron. And if you do believe that Barry used steroids (as many of his defenders do), then why are you slamming all the other folks that agree with you?

I honestly have no clue whether or not Barry Bonds used steroids - That makes me neither obtuse nor a moron, it makes me an honest person. None of you have any real evidence that he used either but that doesn't stop you from swearing that he did and poking fun at those who admit they don't know - What does that make you? A**holes in my book.

I never really liked the man all that much because he always beat up on my guys - But he's one hell of a ballplayer and no one who loves the game of baseball can deny that - all comments from Dale "I used to have class" Murphy notwithstanding.

As an aside, my calling BS on the previous poster wasn't a statement that his claim was impossible; merely that it was strangely convenient for his hysterical defense of the Roid King.

Whatever - you can make all the excuses you like. If you have no evidence to argue, pound the table.

A-Rod just passed 500. He’ll need over 250 more to get to where Bonds is. That’s 5 more 50-HR seasons or 6-plus 4-HR seasons. He’s 32.

But if he continues to have those kinds of seasons and plays to the age Bonds is now, he might have a shot at Sadaharu Oh (868.)

Wouldn’t you love to see Home Run Derby with Babe Ruth, Bonds, Aaron, A-Rod, Josh Gibson, Oh, Mule Suttles (the other great Negro League slugger), and either McGwire or Sosa? Now, I’d watch that.

Obviously. But the issue at hand isn't muscle mass, it's bone mass. And working with weights doesn't increase the latter.

Right - I get it - His bone mass has increased...So Doctor Mr. Mojo, please explain this in detail. How does this occur? Why would it occur? Where would you expect to see this increased bone mass and why?

And no cheating by copying articles or bits thereof from the Internet.

For extra credit, please post any medical evidence that Barry Bonds actually suffers from this condition. Note I said MEDICAL evidence, not photos of him in everyday life.

My head has grown in the past 5-10 years and I’m past 35. I’ve gone from a 7 1/8 hat size to a 7 1/2 and all I take is some aspirin an an occasional sinus pill. (I keep waiting for the sinus recall.)
