Bonds hits 756th home run to set MLB record

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Barry Bonds became the most prolific home-run hitter in Major League Baseball history Tuesday night, slugging his 756th in front of more than 43,052 hometown fans to pass Henry Aaron. Bonds' record-setting homer came in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 5-4 lead over the Washington Nationals. Bonds hit a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik deep to center field. The game was delayed by a standing ovation for Bonds, whose late father Bobby was a Giants player, coach and front-office employee.... Bonds also holds the season record for home runs with 73 in 2001.

The 43-year-old Bonds, who has spent 21 years in the majors, had tied Aaron at 755 on Saturday in the Giants' 3-2 loss in San Diego. Aaron's record had stood since 1976, when he retired after 22 years in the majors.

Whether you dislike Barry Bonds or not, there’s always a lot of whining and complaining whenever a home run record is about to be broken.

People whined that Roger Maris hit 61 in a 162 game schedule, whereas Babe Ruth only played 154.

People whined when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record because Ruth only had about 8400 AB’s and Aaron was approaching 11,000 AB’s. Then there was the whole racial element.

People whined when McGwire and then Bonds broke the single-season home run record because “watered down pitching,” hitter-friendly parks, and that crazy stuff that made their arms grow so big.

The bottom line is that 756 is more than 755 and Bonds will have the record until A-Rod breaks it.

Again, why these moronic Congressional hearings (what do they have to do with baseball?)

Baseball's anti-trust exemption for one. Congress has wide latitude in oversight of what goes on in baseball. Unprescribed steroid use is also illegal.

And why not in the NFL, where usage is far more rampant?

You need to pay attention:

congress NFL steroid

You just had a bad dream, no one has passed a true hero named Hank Aaron. Whew, I almost had the same nightmare.

I don’t pretend to know much about amphetamines, or steroids for that matter, so there might be a perfectly sane reason for me being wrong on this, but I’ll ask anyway.

If amphetamines help to keep me awake or give me energy, doesn’t that put me in a better position to play a day game after a night game or maybe the 11th straight game in the middle of August or even to play after a cross-country flight in the middle of the night?

I am getting tired of the excuses for Bonds at the expense of guys like Aaron. If you look at the HR numbers of guys like McGuire, Sosa, Bonds or some of the other big hitters from a few years ago its obvious roids helped their longball. I believe Sosa went from hittin in the 30's to 6o's and McGuire went from the high 50's to the low 70's. Bonds did the same along with some lower level guys like Ken Camineti and the guy from the Yankees/Oakland (his name is escaping me).

Once they get off the roidss their numbers go back to normal. 50 hr's is a big deal, 40 hr's is a big deal but the guys like Griffey and A-Rod didn't juice to get their numbers. Bonds and the whole Balco deal is about getting by the testing. Its about players using illegal performance enhancing drugs made to be undetectable by scientists so they can hit more HR make more money and break records. Its BS and as far as NFL guys juicing? Well when they get caught they get suspended but Emmitt, Walter and Sanders along with Marino, Elway and Montana were never on them.

Failing a drug test would be proof. Hasn’t happened yet.

You know, that is one of the reasons why golf is such a wonderful sport. You cannot wear any device or apparatus that mechanically affects the swing. Baseball would be better if it banned the shields the players seem to all be using.

Dude, please explain how Barry’s head grew 2” and feet grew about 3” to 4” after he was 35 years old? I guess it was just a freak “natural” thing. I know you like the guy but be realistic and stop being ignorant.

Ahhh, a training device. Not USGA legal for play. That was my point.

Bonds could wear his all day long at BP, but it would be nice to see that removed when he’s at bat in a game.

If this "*" is good enough for Roger Maris, this "*" is good enough for Barry Bonds.

They’re not your Cardinals, they’re mine! :) Tough year this year.

The first home run I ever saw, which took place during the first game I went to, was at old Sportsman Park back in the day and was hit by Henry Aaron. I still go by the old park site on Grand every couple of years. BTW, my father and grandfather were at Musial’s first game.

“There’s a new homerun champion of all time and it’s Barry Bonds.”

Until Alex Rodriguez beats him — for the North AMERICAN record. The home run champion of all time is Sadaharu Oh.
