SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Barry Bonds became the most prolific home-run hitter in Major League Baseball history Tuesday night, slugging his 756th in front of more than 43,052 hometown fans to pass Henry Aaron. Bonds' record-setting homer came in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 5-4 lead over the Washington Nationals. Bonds hit a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik deep to center field. The game was delayed by a standing ovation for Bonds, whose late father Bobby was a Giants player, coach and front-office employee.... Bonds also holds the season record for home runs with 73 in 2001.

The 43-year-old Bonds, who has spent 21 years in the majors, had tied Aaron at 755 on Saturday in the Giants' 3-2 loss in San Diego. Aaron's record had stood since 1976, when he retired after 22 years in the majors.

That is only 18 more HR's over 9 seasons. That proves NOTHING.

So you actually believe that Bonds has not used steroids?

You have an opinion. It may be right or wrong but stick with it for arguments sake.

“But that big of an increase? Ha!”

Wow! Almost the exact words I have heard said about Bonds. But if you are referring to “people” here, maybe they are not football fans, or fans of bicycle racing, or basketball or professional (Yeah, I know it’s a stretch) wrestling. But from what I can see on a search, plenty of other people are concerned about its use in football.

When I have kids.

I will tell them about how great Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth were. A-Rod perhaps by then. but not BARROID BONDS.

Infact, in my mind, Henry Aaron still owns this record.

I wonder what Hank thinks about this? He sounds like a classy guy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he congratulates Bonds; but I bet he's pissed that someone juiced his way to 756.

Ya gotta love these Before/After pictures of Bonds. Do you REALLY believe that Bonds wasn't lying before the grand jury? "According to grand jury documents obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle, Bonds testified that he unknowingly took steroids under the assumption that they were flaxseed oil and an arthritis balm." Riiiggggggggght, Barry, right. I believe you. Yeah, sure.

I saw that part of the game (on MLB Extra Innings). Someone did catch Barry’s 756th HR ball. Young guy in a gray baseball jersey. He was “escorted” out — actually almost carried out — by about 10 policemen. The kid was triumphant, as if he just hit the lottery. Which he did, of course...

The story is that he’s from New York City, a Mets fan. He and a buddy are on their way to Australia and on a whim decided to go the game tonight and bought scalped tickets.

OMG... I thought I recognized that jersey (above)... that sure looks like a METS jersey. Wow... lucky guy!

Barry Bonds is a cheat.

His record is a fraud.

Anyone who defends his cheating disgraces the game of baseball and physics.

Barry can recover faster from day to day and at bat to at bat because he takes steroids.

Barry can hit the ball farther because he takes steroids.

Barry Bonds went from a bean pole who hit 30 home runs a year to a monster who hit 60-70 home runs a year because he takes steroids.

In my day, I could hit a baseball, but like everyone else, you get tired and worn down over time.

The most games I ever played in a year was 85. At the end, repeated swinging pushed you from swinging for the downs to swinging for opposite field hits and hoping to stretch it out to a double or triple by stealing a couple bases.

The guys who went on to play college, minor-league ball, semi-pro ball and the five or six guys I played against who went on to play pro-ball were a lot better early in the year than they were toward the end.

Baroid was normal before he cheated and took steroids.

He used to get tired and fizzle out. Hence, his awful playoff performances with the Pirates.

He wanted the glory, so he cheated.

Barry can with steroids.

I live on asthma meds...does that make me a cheat?

No. Even the Olympic Committee says asthma medications (inhalers, etc.) are allowable. I actually checked this out at one point when my daughter, an asthmatic was qualifying for the US Gymnastics Nationals.

They are not "performance enhancing". As it is, enhalers will barely get my daughter back to normal oxygen exchange - such as I have.

Just a thought here ... who among us have the same build as we did in our early twenties? Even those who work out.

Anyone?

I’m just asking that question alone. That, in and of itself, is not prima facie evidence of steroid use. Other evidence may be. I won’t rule that out. But this side by side comparison of a young man against his middle-age self is, by itself, ridiculous.

I just mentioned Merriman a few posts before you. So maybe try looking at my other posts before, too. ;)

But what does Merriman's suspension really say? Suspending one player in a league rampant with steroid use? And that's only after a more recent crackdown by the league. And there have been more suspensions than Merriman. But look at the media attention. And that of the feds. The NFL is being ignored. Hear anything when Jamal Lewis was breaking the NFL season rushing record? But compare him to Eric Dickerson:

Tell you what. Tell me what you make of the following: *Over the past 25 years, the average NFL player is 25 pounds heavier, averaging 245.

*Over the same period, the average offensive lineman is 62 pounds heavier; defensive lineman, 34 pounds.

*Running backs weigh 17 pounds more and quarterbacks are 26 pounds heavier.

And yet you'd have to agree that the game has also increased in speed. How is this possible? Really, look at the physiques of players 25 years ago with those of today. Yes, diet. Yes, supplements. Yes, better training. But yes, also, more steroid usage.

The armor elbow pad he wears is just as corrupt as steriods.

The people defending Bonds at FR have arguments that fall into three categories that I've seen:

1) Bonds is great and would have broken the record even without the steroids. (yeah, right...)

2) Steroids aren't a big deal—everybody does it. (This echoes the Clinton defenders during the Lewinsky scandal.)

3) You can't "prove" to me that he did steroids.

You will notice that there has not been a single post from someone saying that they don't believe he juiced up, because even his biggest defenders know that such a claim would be preposterous.

I don't know if he has or hasn't. I do know that there hasn't been one positive test on him. He has been tested more than any other player in baseball.

I do know that his off-season training routine rivals any other. He has other athletes begging to train with him. That's what cost him his friendship with Gary Sheffield. Sheffield wanted to train w/ Bonds but he refused to take it seriously. So Bonds cut him loose.

So, if he did or if he didn't will always be in question. I was just giving the stats.

Whether Bond or Aaron is the true record holder is a personal decision. Trying to convince someone, who has clearly express an opposing viewpoint regarding this issue, is pointless. Nobody who has joined one camp or the other is going to switch sides at this point.

As for myself, I believe Bonds has and is taking steroids. No, I don't have proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Nonetheless, I believe their is enough circumstantial evidence. I therefore believe Hank Aaron is still the true home run champion. If you feel differently, that's fine. As I said, this is a personal decision.
