Bonds hits 756th home run to set MLB record

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Barry Bonds became the most prolific home-run hitter in Major League Baseball history Tuesday night, slugging his 756th in front of more than 43,052 hometown fans to pass Henry Aaron. Bonds' record-setting homer came in the fourth inning to give the Giants a 5-4 lead over the Washington Nationals. Bonds hit a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik deep to center field. The game was delayed by a standing ovation for Bonds, whose late father Bobby was a Giants player, coach and front-office employee.... Bonds also holds the season record for home runs with 73 in 2001.

The 43-year-old Bonds, who has spent 21 years in the majors, had tied Aaron at 755 on Saturday in the Giants' 3-2 loss in San Diego. Aaron's record had stood since 1976, when he retired after 22 years in the majors.

What’s to ignore? Do you know for a fact the reason why the trainer did what he did, or for whom? Did this trainor give you information he failed to give anyone else? You can speculate all you want, but when the day is done it’s still only speculation. When the evidence is there I’ll accept it. Until then . . .

Well, a growth in shoe size would probably be more indicative of growth hormone usage than steroids. All the same...

I don’t know how old you are Junior-G but I was wondering if you have a degree in Pharmacology, Anatomy, and Psychology? You seem to know so much about this subject.

You suggested that it was questionable whether or not Bonds' steroid use would have helped him hit the ball any harder. I say that's a ridiculous statement. If you still stand by that statement, then I will boldy suggest that I know more about steroids than you.

“No one says a word about what happens in the NFL.”

Regarding the above statement. Maybe some people are baseball fans and not football fans. As to anyone anywhere concerned about steroid use in the NFL, I’ll get back to you after I have done a search. I cannot believe “No one” has ever said a word about being a problem in football. And how is his accomplishment extraordinary if indeed he only got there by using steroids? Let’s face it, the legitimacy of it is suspect.

Babe Ruth too, and he was real sneaky about it -- steroids in his hot dogs.

Probably all that Red Dye #5 helped..... Oh wait a minute. That came later ;-).

I saw the "winner" of Barry's 756th HR ball... young guy in a gray baseball jersey. He was escorted out by about 10 cops...

He's most likely in the bottom of that pile shown in your pic (#160).

Bonds adnitted that he “might” have taken them, but he didnt know that that was what they were. Thats what he said under oath. Not very convincing testimony and certainly not a denial. Mitchell’s report has him nailed, its just a question of whether theyre going to try to put this creep in jail. Personally, I wish they would.

I’m a big MMA fan, and they’re starting to have problems with steroids too. The most recent UFC Light Heavyweight championship was hit with scandal when both the champion and challenger tested positive for steroids, and I’ll tell you—nobody is coming out and saying that steroids should just be accepted in mixed martial arts. The lightweight champion will probably have his title stripped and be suspended for a year. Nobody in any sport should have to take steroids just to keep pace with all the juiceheads that are getting away with it.

Well, of course people have talked about steroid usage being an issue in the NFL. See Sean Merriman recently.

But it’s far more hush-hush, and I assure you that the rate of steroid usage is far higher in the NFL and college football than it is in baseball. You don’t hear people lashing out at NFL record breakers, throwing astericks next to their names, and blackballing them over allegations of steroid use.

Seriously, look at the size and speed of the guys playing the game today. Then look at them in even the 1980s. There’s no comparison. Granted, yes, supplements like creatine have helped some. So have better diet regimens (the single most important ingredient in gaining size) and training techniques.

But that big of an increase? Ha!

FYI... the Barry Bonds 756th HR and celebration was aired on the center field screen at Angels Stadium (I was watching the Red Sox vs Angels game, flipping back and forth to the Nationals vs Giants game). Lots of BOOs from the Angels crowd...

Steroid use and the NFL. 10/23/06 NFL suspends Shawne Merriman for 4 games (steroid use). I strongly suggest before stating that “No one says a word about what happens in the NFL.” you do even a minute of research. Google is your friend.

Source for your claim? I’m not denying, just wanting to check the facts. Oh, by the way, I’ve also heard reports that the substance at issue is the same that was used by Mark Mcguire, which was legal at the time it was being used. If that’s the case (and, again, I have no evidence either way) then neither could be said to have broken any laws or rules. Time will out on this issue. I’ll await the official score before I pass judgement.

Ah, that's the new millionaire! Thanks. ;-)

I can't make out what jersey he's wearing... doesn't look like a Giants jersey.

SoldierDad -

Barry is a great man. You are right - he plays with young kids, jokes with his teammates, etc. His mistrust of the media came about by the way they treated his dad. He learned very young that you can't trust the MSM. Go figure.

As for the steroid bruhaha:

The numbers do not back up what people say. From 1990 to 1998 Bonds had 327 HR's. From 1990 to 2007 the "steroid years" he's hit 345 HR's. That is only 18 more HR's over 9 seasons. That proves NOTHING.

Then why did Bonds feel the need to use the chemicals he has, if - as you say, he would have still hit 756 without them...?

The answer - he would not have. He might have been a decent hitter, but nowhere near a record holder.
