Governor (Schwarzenegger) posts CHP to Oakland to help combat homicide spike

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday responded to a recent spike in Oakland homicides by committing more California Highway Patrol officers to patrol the city, where 79 people have been killed this year.

"The violence in Oakland is absolutely unacceptable and represents a serious threat to innocent people," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "We must do everything we can to eliminate that threat."

The shooting death of a journalist downtown last week increased awareness of violence in the area. And even as community leaders gathered over the weekend to mourn Chauncey Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post, gunfire felled seven others between Friday and Sunday.

It's still unclear how many additional CHP officers will be sent to Oakland under the governor's plan. But their mission will be to work with local law enforcement to bolster officers' presence on the street and support efforts to combat gang violence, the governor and CHP said.

"What this will do is put more eyes and ears on the streets to help reduce the crime rate in Oakland," said Trent Cross, CHP spokesman in Oakland. "We're going to conduct proactive enforcement, be out, be visible, take an aggressive approach to enforcing the law."

The governor's initiative came after a request for help from Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums.

I have a friend in California who's been covering/following the Bailey murder. Wasn't Dellums the congressman in bed with socialism?

Ironically, the first place the police should scope out is the donut shop.

What with murderous bakers-of-faith and all.

Affectionately known as Ron "Red" Dellums.

What really needs to happen but probably never will: Get People v. Green (1991) reversed, and make mere membership in a criminal street gang a criminal offense. Then round up all of these losers. Use the National Guard if you have to.

They defined an area of the city as a gang zone. If any two gang members were seen in public together, then they were arrested. I’ll see if I can dig up an article for you. It is mostly E. Market street area that you need to stay away from.

I don’t understand why we don’t use RICO laws to use wire taps and plant bugs so we can take every gang member off the streets.

It wouldn’t take long if we froze bank accounts and followed the paper trail.

What the hell are our federal, state and local law enforcement people waiting for?

They could also make illegal any gang whose members had created two or more felonies as a crime enterprise or some such. Damn it, lets get creative and put an end to this nonsense.

Where’s Chuck Noris and Charles Bronson when you need them?

We have the same problem in Milwaukee, (been going on for years) we have reached the point where street gangs control parts of the city.

Something seriously needs to be done to clean up crime, and the first thing is tougher laws and visible police presence, the second thing is to get rid of all the corruption and dirty cops who look the other way. But in Milwaukee, and probably in Oakland the problem goes all the way up to the top, including the local politicians.

The problem is that cities are responsible for hiring and paying for police. And too many cities won’t cut the spending or raise the taxes to pay for an adequate police force.

This graph spells it out completely— LA isn’t listed but it would be placed between Oakland (bottom of the graph’s list) and Cincinnati (2nd from the bottom).
http://www.orpn.org/cities_DOJ.gif

Oakland has 16 cops per 10,000 residents. New York, in contrast has just over 50 cops per 10,000. NYC has the lowest crime rate of any major city. If a city has a crime rate above New York’s (that would be all of the major cities and most of the smaller ones), the first step should be to expand the police department to the size (per capita) of NYPD.

Protecting life and property is the first obligation of government. If the cities aren’t willing to spend the money, state legislatures should step in and impose the necessary taxes on those localities to pay for new police officers (or for the cost of bringing in state policemen).

“Wasn’t Dellums the congressman in bed with socialism?”

“In bed with socialism” makes it sound almost legitimate. Dellums was the owner of the factory that made the beds. For the entire time he was a congressman, and incidentally named the most ineffectual member of the House, his office was Havana, and Fidel his ventriloquist.
