I’m amazed the dead hens are not useful in the dog food industry.

I am too, for any animal feed.

I wouldn’t feed them to my dog.

Around here they have incinerators and compost piles. I suppose a source of animal food is feasible. Seems like a waste of landfill to me.

I’ve been planning on aquiring a few hens for the backyard as soon as I thin the duck flock. Eggs from free range hens at the farmers market are so much better than those from the big egg producers you get at the grocery store.

I’ve got the coop plans stored in the computer, just need nnn0jeh to find the time to build it.

Oh, Man! What a bunch of bleeding heart hippies! If you can’t stand the heat...get out of the chicken coop!

All the more reason this area is ripe for the pickin’ for my free-range, organically raised eggs from cage-free, happy hens! I’m so HAPPY to make a buck off of these dopes. I can sell a 39-cent dozen of eggs for $2 and up! *SMIRK*

For further edification, I suggest the documentary: “The Natural History of the Chicken.” You can get it through your library. It’s very good.

“Around here they have incinerators and compost piles. I suppose a source of animal food is feasible. Seems like a waste of landfill to me.”

I learned ‘the ins and outs’ of composting an entire dairy cow a few weeks ago through a goat farmer that I know. It can be done. “We mammals” break down incredibly fast into our base components. ;)

Most farmers around here compost their dead livestock. If you do it right there’s no smell, no muss and no fuss. Of course, that is, until the PETA Phreaks find out about you, LOL!

I take my deceased (of natural causes; old age or a raccoon attack) laying hens down the farm lane to the Back Forty and leave them at the edge of the woods for the coyotes. They don’t waste a feather.

Nature’s Recyclers. ;)

generally the chicks were fed into a vacuum tube that had them hit a plate before they went into the grinder so they would be stunned and unconscious prior to death. The practice is called maceration and, when administered properly, is considered humane by the standards established by the AVMA.

I'm a farm girl and pretty realistic about what has to happen when you're raising animals for food. It's a business, not a game or a Disney movie. But the above is too much. This goes beyond the pale. If we are going to kill and eat animals, we have to do it in a decent way, and feeding live chicks into a grinder is not decent.
