Alcohol Nanny Breathalyzers
American Spectator ^ | 07 aug 07 | Eric Peters

"Pre-emptive war" got us into a real mess in Iraq. So maybe we ought to think twice before adopting similar measures when it comes to traffic law. Specifically, when it comes to an idea floated by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to require that all new cars be fitted with an ignition interlock that can detect alcohol in the driver's system -- and shut the car down if it does.

Several large automakers (including GM, Ford, Toyota and Honda) also support the idea -- and are working on ways to get these things into new cars, maybe within the next two or three years, if not sooner.

Sounds OK in principle -- sort of like the idea of liberating Iraq. The devil's in the details, though.

Or a canned air market to blow into the device.

First thing I thought of when I read this article, and how much money there would be in it.

“Words fail me when it comes to clueless Freepers who claim to understand personal property rights.”

Oh you mean the fact that cars are our property. Don’t forget those little black boxes that are already being installed. The ones they can download your driving stats if theres an accident.

Damn, that makes it all the sadder. The guy is educated, but still dumb when it comes to personal liberties.

It has gotten to the point that even the dealership mechanics don't know how to repair the goofy nanny systems in the new cars.

I have not followed the story but New Mexico was trying to get a requirement for ignition interlocks passed in the State. It's not surprising that American auto manufacturing has a dubious future.

Looks like I’ll be driving the old 79 ford pickup for a long time!

Since I stopped going to bars due to the smoking bans and my seat has been taken up by some self righteous nico-nazi, let him deal with the new nanny state......LOL!

We warned them, but they refused to listen to us.

What’s to stop me drinking after I start the car?

What's to stop me from pouring alcohol down my neighbors Breathalyzer at night?

That 79 ford will be easily retrofitted with a cheap (only $1000) device that will be required for all good citizens.

Maybe it should dial onstar and have them report it to 911, too.

“Hi this is onstar, we have noticed that you have placed the key in the ignition and blew a .13. As such we have locked you in the car until the police arrive.”

Well, a specific product marketed as “Beat the Breathalyzer in your car”, probably not much. But I figure if say Ziplock can take advantage of the drug market, then the already existing canned air market (big at cleaning dust out of computers) can take advantage of it as well. Then there’s the portable air compressor market, for filling up tires and other inflatable things... who knows even your canned breath freshener could work.

While I applaud everything Bryan has done for FR, and I was well aware of it, he is still a nanny-statist on this and I have no use for nanny staters on any issues.

So far the “government” hasn’t mandated this, but it will happen, and it will happen very soon because of people like Bryan.

Apparently you are an idiot. Where does this kind of crap end. Should we all bend over and have our anus's checked because we could be hiding drugs? My analogy is a spot on comparison to what you propose, which is a disgusting trampling of liberties with a presumtion of guilt. Nice knowing you survived here this long, but now you've been outted, commie.

Crawl back under your bridge, troll.

Maybe FR should become SFR, for Semi-Free Republic.

LOL< A nanny-statist calling me a troll. C’mon, be honest with yourself on this one, you know it’s as crappy an idrea as they come. No, wait, it’s not a crappy idea, it’s downright disgusting.

Well, that's a relief, technology is so reliable these days, especially with the government mandating the design.

Technology has indeed been pretty awesome. I realize that you were being sarcastic, but anti-lock brakes have already saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

I’m tired of trying to convert them.

I'm starting to agree with you.

I have to laugh though, the main FReeper anti-smokers never seem to show up on threads like this.............hmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder why?

Very plausible possibility. I’m shocked anyone here could advocate such a thing.

With rats like that, posting on a conservative site, is there really that much hope?

Change that to a "supposedly" conservative website and I can grasp your point.

The number of nanny-state lovers around here seems to increase by the day.
